Possible midfield solution
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:14:54 PM »

After a chat with a Northwich fan on the Chester train yesterday we agreed that Welch is class. He said that he was just unfit as they didn't do any proper fitness training, but otherwise that he had always been great for them. After seeing our perforomance against Cambridge, I can't fault the effort from any player, we were great in defence, but I couldn't help thinking we were clueless going forward and in possession. People were making the wrong, badly timed runs (especially Denham, he really needs to anticipate situtaions better!! How many times was he offside?) and using the ball like a hot potato. I don't want to be having too much of a go at Heathcote after a decent season, but surely such forward moves should be practiced in training?
It has been said many times that we need someone in midfield how puts his foot on the ball and reads the game. In my opinion the most inteliigent footballers who can read the game should be in midfield - imo Densmore, Senior and, I reckon, Welch. There was a point in the second half where, in spite being under pressure, Welch played a pinpoint pass down the right for Denham instead of just whacking it. That is exactly what we need in the middle of the field.
In this vein, my team for next season would be:
                     Coburn
Lane         McGregor        Young         Doughty

Senior       Densmore       Welch          New left mid

   Johnson        Little/new striker

I like Welch, but I'm not sure he'd have the legs to play centre midfield.

Controversial lineup, who would be your captain?

What happened to Smith as well? He'd have to start before Laney any day in my book!! Don't suppose we could get Byrom from Vics as he seems to be the sort of midfield player we need.
