Was Slough away on a night game towards the end of that season? A bizarre game, attended by Alty, Slough, Barnet and Wycombe fans.

Oh yes!

The key games in that final week of the season were:-

Saturday: Barnet 3 Welling United 2
Sunday: Stafford Rangers 2 Altrincham 1
Monday: Wycombe Wanderers 1 Barnet 3....this game looked dodgy.
Tuesday: Slough Town 3 Altrincham 3....this game was dodgy.
Thursday: Altrincham 0 Northwich Victoria 2
Saturday: Altrincham 1 Boston United 1

Nurse!!!!!!

seem to remember losing 1-0 at barrow as well in that run in.....with the barrow keeper wasting time like a good un pretending he couldn't see the ball behind the net....

Slough and Stafford both sickeners.....ken McKenna got himself suspended and Mark Carter signed for barnet and not us......great season though....

Sadly I went to all four of those first games quoted, so you can blame me. In the first Welling, having come back from 2 down, saw a Garry Abbott injury time shot cleared off the line, only for it to be hoofed clear into the path of Spike Carter to score the winner. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be ours after that.

Always remember the crowd for the Barnet game being given as 3000, which was at the time just a couple of years after Hillsborough, the official capacity of the ground. Probably around 5000 there that day.
The gate for the last game of the season v Boston was given as 1736. It looked more like 736 & I've always believed that the figure was adjusted to take in some (if not all) of the Barnet surplus.

That was my understanding. Although how Trafford MBC didn't get on he clubs case for exceeding the limit on capacity bemuses me. Thankfully!

Given that the kick off was delayed on police advice, did they maybe feel that given there clearly was space for more than 3,000 people it was actually less problematic to admit them.

I.e., better to have 4,000 in than 1,000 locked out.

My dad was a gateman that day and told me afterwards that the attendance was 4,371

I was at Stafford that Sunday, I'd guestimate we took 1000-1500, somewhere in the middle being fair. Halcyon days. Since then the only bigger away following I have seen us take was Spurs '95.

Carter did well at Barnet in the football league - I remember reading an article about him in their first Football League season - he remained part time, being a market stall holder in Liverpool and scored many goals.  Also, I do remember a fellow Alty fan turning up to Barnet's first League game - a 7-4 defeat by Crewe - and being gutted to find Paul Showler in a Barnet shirt.

The commentator on Paul Rowlands...

"He's a sales executive with a fancy car and a fancy mobile telephone but when he gets on the pitch he plays like one of the lads"

Brilliant.

Wish it was 1991 all over again with those fancy mobile phones.

I took two days sick off work (one always looks dodgy) to drive down from Hull for that Slough game. There were more Barnet fans than Slough fans......awful memories.

Strange to think the number of people there that day that I now know that I didn't then.

Indeed, I was also at the Stafford game and the home games with Vics and Boston. It was that there London that became the common denominator several years later.
