Was Slough away on a night game towards the end of that season? A bizarre game, attended by Alty, Slough, Barnet and Wycombe fans.

We used to go and watch the team train quite regularly and in the week or two before that in training, Martin Lewis finishing had been excellent. Hence, why he had been pushed into an emergency striker role.

I think this sort of information can be filed under 'that is no consolation Ballers'to

Oh yes!

The key games in that final week of the season were:-

Saturday: Barnet 3 Welling United 2
Sunday: Stafford Rangers 2 Altrincham 1
Monday: Wycombe Wanderers 1 Barnet 3....this game looked dodgy.
Tuesday: Slough Town 3 Altrincham 3....this game was dodgy.
Thursday: Altrincham 0 Northwich Victoria 2
Saturday: Altrincham 1 Boston United 1

Rumours were that Barnet chairman Stan Flashman went into the Slough dressing room at half time and offered each player a considerable amount of money not to lose the game.

I see.  :o It's one way of firing up a team who had nothing to play for.

Always remember the crowd for the Barnet game being given as 3000, which was at the time just a couple of years after Hillsborough, the official capacity of the ground. Probably around 5000 there that day.

I still think something fishy happened that season

No doubt about that.

It did and money was at the heart of it.

The Chequers!  Look at some of those adverts!

Who was the ref? Had a Cheshire badge on, but I can't place him.

John,

The referee on that memorable afternoon was James McGrath of Higher Bebington, Wirral.

seem to remember losing 1-0 at barrow as well in that run in.....with the barrow keeper wasting time like a good un pretending he couldn't see the ball behind the net....

Slough and Stafford both sickeners.....ken McKenna got himself suspended and Mark Carter signed for barnet and not us......great season though....

Big FA Cup games aside, that following at Stafford is the biggest I can remember for an away league match. Anyone know how many?

The gate for the last game of the season v Boston was given as 1736. It looked more like 736 & I've always believed that the figure was adjusted to take in some (if not all) of the Barnet surplus.
