There could be as many as 16 former league teams in the NL next season (even if that does include Gateshead), Add the likes of Boreham Wood and Woking, and the Conference has never been more competitive. Average crowds over 3,000 for the first time too - more than some seasons for the 4th division in the 1980's Probably a good thing we're going full time!

P.S. Colne Dynamoes were mentioned in the match commentary, in relation to Alan Kennedy. They were spending a lot of money at the time weren't they? Is it fair to describe them as the first of the modern generation of boom and bust clubs trying to buy their way up the leagues?

Local to Alty Chris Millington is the new manager at fax

Oh good for him. He's a lovely bloke, and seems to have done well at places where he has been (I seem to remember he had a coaching role at Altrincham briefly) and I think he deserves his chance.

BBC are reporting that Liverpool supporters have had problems getting into the stadium, that not enough gates were opened, that there has been indiscriminate use of pepper spray on supporters, and possible crushing outside the stadium.

Firstly, I hope that everyone is ok.

Secondly, why have scenes like this been allowed to happen again, and at a match involving Liverpool of all teams?

Thirdly, not the first time that English supporters have had problems at a French stadium England supporters were left at the mercy of hooligans in 2016.

Fourthly, is enough being done to make sure that, even if everything goes wrong, people will still be safe?

Fifthly, there was a stadium announcement blaming the delay on Liverpool supporters arriving late. For me this doesn't wash and is unacceptable.

Goodness, I hope so!

What happened to him (and to Crewe) anyway? He didn't seem to be doing much there, despite early promise, and there was that bizarre loan of Dale to Blackpool. I never would have imagined them having such a bad season.

I'd have thought us v Oldham and Halifax v Chesterfield with Wrexham City going up 👆.

Blimey, they changed their name already? That was quick! :)

I know Swansea Town changed their name. Am I right in thinking that they are the only ones to haver done so in a similar situation? I assume Southend won't switch to Southend City.

When did we ever let not scanning stop us! To put into perspective how far they have come, apparently they won the West Sussex league fourth division North as recently as 2001. Kirkham and Wesham, who played in the upper reaches of the West Lancashire league might have been positively big time Charlies in comparison.

I suspect there are rather  a lot of people who have more charm than Dave Pace (as anyone in the Noel White Suite that fateful day will tell you)!

I go back to 74/75 and can't properly remember Tony Broadhead playing for us, but do remember him returning as a Bangor City player a season or two later and getting more abuse than any other opposition player I had seen to that point.

I assume he went with Roy Rees to Bangor, but did he leave with particular bad feeling?

Didn't realise you were such a late starter 😂😂
As far as I recall, there was no reason for the bad feelings generally it was usually when there was a m*cc or a v*cs that sparks started to fly.

Yes. I remember when Stuart Terry went to Northwich (scuse my language), and the banter about his clean shirt.

I always think it's a pity there isn't more video footage of those days. Someone really should write a book about Alty in the 70's and 80's whilst there are still plenty of people who remember it - the stuff of legend! I remember "Kingdom Come", written in the aftermath of the Maunders debacle - are there any other books about Alty?

It's Jordan...

If that's the case, it's not looking good for Mullarkey signing on as if he'd stayed he'd have been the ideal candidate.

Oh ye of little faith...

Dorking up too. Not quite the same appeal as York but congratulations to them as well. A new ground to visit, Meadowbank.

A popular win given that nobody seems to like Ebbsfleet.

Part-time too, will be interesting to see what they do.
They might start singing “part time and we’re proud of it” to us and “Do you practice that all week?” 😂😂😂

We could still sing "We've been once, twice, three times to Wembley, and you've won the Surrey cup"!

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Poll - attendances next season.
« on: May 16, 2022, 07:03:47 PM »
A fair point. Still, we've had similar schemes in previous years and never come anywhere near these crowds (my first match against Bangor in 1990 was with a free ticket). We knew about these schemes before the season started, but I wonder how many people would have voted for crowds of over 2,000 if that had been an option? It is notable at any rate that someone said we should have crowds of at least 1,500 before thinking about full time, so even if it was several hundred less  we'd still be alright.

Well, I'm glad to say I was wrong to be worried about our attendances this season.

In fact, three quarters of us were wrong, with only 25% predicting increased attendances this season! In hindsight, one could point to several reasons for this. Still, to get crowds of over 2,000 a game finishing 14th - very nearly as many as an FC Halifax Town side challenging for promotion - is remarkable. What an achievement, and what a bright future could await us. Congratulations to all who made it happen, and thank you.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Poll: where will Altrincham finish?
« on: May 15, 2022, 11:49:28 PM »
Looking again at the pre-season poll on where we will finish. Congratulations to the 12 who voted 12th to 14th. (For the record, I went for 15th to 17th - done at the last by Woking not winning!). It is interesting to note that over two thirds of the vote was for lower than we did finish, so I think the season has to rate as a success. I am happy anyway - our best points per game since 1996 (unless you count the Chester City matches in 2009 to 10, a season further complicated by Salisbury being kicked out).

Far too early for a poll for next season, but if the transition to full time goes smoothly, hopefully we can improve again. and we should be better equipped to cope with a challenging financial climate than some clubs.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: ALTY BEER FESTIVAL 2022

Dunham do an Alty Ale.

Don’t think our beers come from Thwaites Steve, their beers are mainly brewed by Marstons these days.

They used to do "Altrincham Pilsner" but I wasn't aware of one since then.
