Title: Alty on the radio
Post by: samba on February 12, 2007, 09:12:23 AM
Hey everyone,
I've managed to land myself a weekly radio show (for 4 weeks) on fuse fm, the University of Manchester radio station (103.5fm if you're near uni, www.fusefm.co.uk if not), every Monday at 6.

It's primarily a music show, but we'll be talking lots so it's an obvious opportunity to plug Alty.  Short of the usual "if you're doing nothing on a Saturday then pop down", anyone have any ideas of what I could say?

If you're looking to get students interested try either of the following:

If you're out of bed before 3pm get yourself down to Moss Lane!

If you've got £10 left in your overdraft why not come to the next home game!

 ;)

How about free beans on toast for anyone brandishing an NUS card, or with a heavily stained t-shirt condemning the war in iraq? Perhaps we could have a happy hour in the bar as well with buy 1 get 1 free on pints of snakebite and black?

You could fool them into coming by telling them its an open air chinese all you can eat, or an anti-capitalism march (which in effect it is as we strive to fight the full-time capitalist scum!)!

Tell them if they don't you'll make them get their hair cut and you wont play any more levellers tracks!

All we really need to do is puit a picture of che guevara on the front of the shirts and sell them in student unions. We'll fill the ground every week!

Certainly English, certainly not wanting to be a yank...

Think of the queue for food though, all those students paying for a half time Bovril and a Twix with a cheque.

This could go on all day, i love it!

Why dont we tell them that we are eco-friendly and we have an entirely bio-degradable stadium, the only one in south manchester. I hope im stood in the queue when the first student ponders the question "Do you do bean burgers"!

Perhaps some daytime tv could be shown in the NWS prior to games? I propose the following schedule:

12:00 - Neighbours
12:25 - Diagnosis Murder
13:25 - Doctors
13:55 - Countdown
14:25 - Neighbours (repeated for those who were still in bed at midday)
14:50 - Into the Golf Road End in time for teams coming out.

As someone who works at The University of Manchester and has regular contact with Students I must say that I find the stereotyping of students, no matter how light hearted the intention may be, insulting.

The Students in the Faculty I work in are industrious in the extreme and attend lectures and practicals for many hours in addition to the work they do at home over evenings, weekends and vacations.

Many also have part time jobs to supplement their meagre finances

Yes, how very kind of Phil to take time out to attempt to redress the balance. He would have stayed around longer and posted something of a little more substance but he had to go to a meeting for the star trek society. Todays topic of conversation: Is cling-on a recognised language, if not how can we relate this to capitalism?

Having gained a degree myself, and having funded myself through university whilst also attempting to watch alty i brought several members of my course to watch Alty, all of whom enjoyed the experience, even Marine away on a rainy february night. Bearing the fruits of my labour as I am (currently earning a tidy crust and living on the french riviera), I believe that it is my right to make light of the "stereotype" that was cast over me for 4 years.

I apologise for offending someone who has provided me with so much security and concern for my well-being whilst supporting the mighty Altrincham. Many people have referred to you as many things on the terraces, most of which could not be repeated on this forum in case children browse this thread, but from now on whenever you scurry past in your suit with the grace of somebody trying to look important, only to be muttered about in a offending manner I will correct them with the truth. Phil Taylor is a good person who stands up for what he believes in!

Actually seeing as though i'm in France you'll have to put up with the murmering, don't let it hamper your stride! See you soon! ;)

Just one other thing, i never said all students were "T**ts". Although in my time as a student i did behave like one on several occasions, this is maybe more to do with me than my identity as a student. Lets just keep it light hearted!

"When I own a pub I'm going to have a special door for students ... Its called the f*ckin exit"
And heckling them for paying 99p for an alcopop drink and then having the cheek to hold up everyone else by paying for it on their Visa card.

Or something like that from Paul Calf, god bless that character.

im all for a bit of light hearted humour but maybe were takin this a bit far calling some students T**ts. i am a student in my 2nd year, when not studying i work with children in the community getting them active and promoting activity. i work hard to support myself through university, making a better life and having fun at the same time. whats wrong in that?
yes i enjoy the lifestyle, i do go out and drink and when im short on cash yes i buy £1 alchopops, but i also work hard for my degree and the fact you all know what programmes are on daytime tv suggest to me that you "hardworkers" do bugger all but watch tv.

No-one called any students 'T**ts'. it just came out in the way some people were portraying them and someone summed it up with the word 'T**t.' right or wrong thts the way it came out :)

Another downside would be the cost of replacing all the bog rolls they'd nick and take home with them.

BTW before any one gets all self rightious, I was one once and that's how I recognise a lot of this stuff. I've seen groups out on a Friday make a round of drinks last two hours. Well it would've been a round if they hadn't all got their own.

now now, dont get upset  :'( just the way you referred to the tv guide in the last message gave me the understandin you were a regular with them. must be "US" students jumping to conclusions again, god were such t***s.

at the end of the day when i graduate i will encourage people to go to uni and work hard but enjoy the lifestyle as you only live once, dont think there is any reason to slag people off simply becasue they are taking advantage of the opportunity to better themselves and enjoy it. if there are any graduates on this forum im sue they'd agree they lived the life to the full when studying.

Not sure poor mike deserved any of that! And will you get it into your over exerted, fully academic brain that nobody called students "T**ts"! that was a main point in my previous post. id say i could point out a few people on here who went uni, and most of them have the ability to laugh at themselves. you obviously dont and therefore will become offended at seriousness of claims that students pay for drinks with cheques. its a shame for you it really is, when i was at uni we prided ourselves on not having a laugh, even at our own expense! You are judging everybody on here as non-students, similarly to phil the steward/ref, maybe you should think about that before ranting at a group of good humoured post-graduates re-living the nostalgia of those easy academic days. one day you look back on university and raise a smile, if you have time in your slightly too serious schedule!

Obviously uni did nothing for me english skills and i can confirm that i did in fact pride myself in always having a laugh, and not always not having a laugh as i initially suggested.

please can we get back to the paul calf style humour. i remember the chippy gag he did, along with some others, very funny that coogan chap. Mr Ecky will provide Coogan quotes on tap and it never fails to amuse me!

and before anyone starts my missus spent many a year at uni and is now bringing in the money as a marketing manager (someone has to feed my Altrincham habit), and yes I heckle her for the "Best days of her life" that she comes out with despite it supposed to be really hard work as she constantly says.

What gets me is why be so touchy about it all ? What is pathetic is to be upset by a passing comment, or is the pathetic thing to continue the debate ... Not sure.

I've learned from this thread that students are not T**ts, just incredibly touchy.  I'll leave Paul Calf to explain the rest....

I was up in court last week for ABH, Actual Bodily Harm, not grievous, I'm not an animal I conducted my own defence and I said...

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I am not on trial here today, society is on trial. Oh f*ck it, I'm on trial, aren't I? But I'm not in contention with the prosecution's version of events. On that we agree. There was a student, he was acting up, he got a slap. But I was under severe provocation. There I was, having a quiet pint, when a student walked past and nudged me, causing me to spill a bit. I did what any fine, upstanding citizen would do. I followed him to the toilet and kicked his head in. Perhaps I should have stopped kicking him when he was in the ambulance. But I did what I did because I want to live in a world where we can have a pint without fear of being nudged by a student. I that a crime? Is it a crime to want to live in a world of peace and harmony? Is it a crime to live in a world of love? Is it a crime to hit a student across the back of the head with a snooker ball in a sock?"

Which of course it is...That's where the defence's case collapsed.

Anyone seen my coat..

OK, here goes....

You lose marks for:

(i) the absence of a capital letter at the start of two paragraphs;

(ii) unnecessary spaces before question marks;

(iii) failing to insert an apostrophe in that's in the second sentence;

(iv) unnecessary comma before and in your third paragraph;

(v) omission of a comma between starts and missus in the third paragraph;

(vi) change supposed to be to supposedly being.

Thank you for feeding my pedantry.
You set them up and I'll bury them in the old onion bag.....!

As someone who is a graduate and found some of teasybeaver's original postings extremely funny charcatures, I cannot understand some people's oversensitivities. Yes ,I was lazy and used to watch Neighbours when I had time and I am proud of it. I also worked when I had to in order to to get the nicely paid job I have now, where I have to work hard and which gives me the means to waste more money on Alty.

However, my studies did teach me something important. Due to studying Marxist Historiographical methodology, I can now see that  the means of production at Altrincham fc have clearly affected the relations of production between Heathcote and the team and it is this economic relationship base that effects the ideological superstructure on which the mighty reds are supported. Quite simply put, if the ownership of the means of production are not changed soon, Alty FC will be relegated and will have to play with the lumenproletariat of the footballing  world, such as Redditch, Hyde and Worksop. It really is that simple!!

Quite simply put, if the ownership of the means of production are not changed soon, Alty FC will be relegated and will have to play with the lumenproletariat of the footballing  world, such as Redditch, Hyde and Worksop. It really is that simple!!

Well i'm sure everyone will agree you hit the nail on the head there arnie, and finally we know how we can relate this to capitalism!

You are a pure genius, to which i am somewhat in a state of envy! see you soon fiend!

I am very sorry but i have never been involved in tertiary level education and i am very dissapointed as you seem to be describing my lifestyle
I am a bone idle pub landlord who insists that my customers leave so i can watch countdown and all the fishing programmes in the afternoon, i then exploit lazy T**t students on minimum wage with no holiday/ pregnancy rights to run the pub whilst i stand at the bar doing absolutely nothing but smoke and drink strong cider.
I am only able to live this sedantry life style because i spent 10 years being a financial adviser telling people to opt out of their pension schems and buy an endowment mortgage followed by 8 years dodging tax as an expat.
so dont tell me about lazy get students i've sh*t em.
they all need to get a real life

Thing is Mr Gazelle they'll have the last laugh, ie drinking your profits when you're not looking, serving their mates for free and eating all your crisps/peanuts. Its purely a guess but i did do a bit of underpaid barwork myself once many moons ago!

Love to be a landlord though, although I think it would be the death of me!
