Perhaps its time to review our transfer policy - it may well have outlived its usefulness for us. (This is a club decision, not a Lee decision by the way).
Some facts - we are a part time club, we do not pay transfer fees. We have a small squad
Consequences - if we recruit someone from the Football League, this will involve them going through a change of life from FT to PT. This is most likely to occur at end of career. And will therefore be fraught with risk. Take Peter Cavanagh as an example - if we had signed him this year he would have been gone in weeks to Everton. Griffith is another example - if he was still fully fit he would have stayed full time and therefore not joined us (not exonerating him from blame here at all)
If we do not pay transfer fees, we cannot identify a player at a club who would fit our style perfectly and then go after them - unless we know for sure they are about to come out of contract.
We have a small squad because this is the way to raise the quality of the average player in the squad, and as such makes sense
But all of the above means we are limited (and always will be limited) to those players who are free agents and who wish to play part time. And because we are only recruiting a small number of players the risk of error is much greater. One duffer stands out much more readily.
Perhaps it is time, in order to make sure of the continued onwards progression of the club, to widen the potential acquisition base for players and consider the paying of transfer fees for those players we beleive will fit into our system. To be able to say (for example) "we need a defensive midfielder, and Joe Bloggs at Conf North FC is perfect, so lets go and get him takes away the risk for those key positions. Our current process is too open to abuse and to error in my view
