It's embarrassing sometimes
« on: December 05, 2009, 08:06:00 PM »

Some of the things people were shouting from the terraces today were idiotic in the extreme and downright embarrassing. Supposedly mature grown adults shouting things like "Break his legs!" or "Snap him!" every time a Histon player came nearby.

How would you feel if these guys actually did get their legs broken or something equally serious? Would that make you happy?

I know we all say/do silly things sometimes and I'm certainly no saint myself. However, I found it completely embarrassing at times during today's game. Some people seriously need to grow up a bit!

I didn't hear any of these comments as we were stood to the right side of the goal away from the main bulk of support, however if there were only the 66 of us as published it can't be too hard to establish who was shouting. However it is football and folk will say stuff they wouldn't elsewhere so it can't be that serious can it?

To be honest I can't recall a quieter game fans wise than today, little if sporadic noise from us, nothing from them. It amused me when the announcer said that it was the last home game before Xmas so lets get the noise going in the second half............nothing! Also a big up of a Histon sub received the silent treatment with not even a noticeable clap for the guy going off.

We were missing a number of large voices today, my guess is that if Rosie didn't start the song it didn't get started.

It takes years of practice - it also helps to be big and fat.  :D

*Disclaimer: I am pissed*

If it is a footy match, then the normal limits are overstepped. Break his legs, doesnt really mean that, rather go in for a good tackle. Personally there are things i would say on a terrace that i would never say in normal conversation

I'm sorry but that's a load of bollocks.

Totally agree. Would you justify racial abuse by the  same argument ? Having said that, standing behind Kingy used to be quite an education !

hmmm I think there is some truth in the fact that football stretches the limits of acceptable behaviour and we probably do shout things we wouldn't in normal life.

But I don't think the limits stretch to shouting break his legs meaning put in a good tackle???

There is of course the "let him die" chant when a player goes down injured....philosphically interesting.

Agreed, self policing is the answer, however although there are certain boundaries, eg racial abuse, excessive foul swearing, we must not get too PC and understand that certain things will be said or shouted at footballthat would not be appropriate in another environment.

I recall as a younger fan, many years ago now, that sometimes just a dissapproving look from a respected older supporter was enough.

I remember many many years ago in the great days of Widnes RLFC (long before the Halton Stadium etc) my parents used to take me to watch the rugby league.

One particular match there was this squarky, raucus voice behind us shouting such as, "Kill 'im. get 'im" etc.

We turned round to find what looked suspiciously like a little, frail looking 70 (if she was a day) year old.
