Today's Altrincham FC Trivia Questions
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:09:59 PM »

Who was the last Alty goalkeeper to be sent off in a competitive match?

When and where did the incident take place?

(I do have an answer for this.....but I could well be wrong...!)

was it 4 or 5 yrs ago on some president dog walkers game....2 minutes to go we were 2-0 or 2-1 down and our keeper handles outside the box (just).

I remember Heathcote was furious...his exact words (2-1/0 and a minute to go...it's game over isn;'t it?)

Got a feeling Steve Lunt scored that night....don't think it was Stu in nets?

I think it was Acky in a senior cup tie.

I think it may have been someone from a lower league, or Vauxhall. It was the last minute, if not injury time, and we were always going to win, and acky picked the ball up just outside the area. The linesman and ref together, rather than allow a quick free kick from which their player scored, decided to pull it back and send Acky off. I don't think they scored the free kick after.

Richard Acton

CSC v Hyde I think.

The Assistant was insistent that it was a Red card despite the fact that there wasn't a Hyde player within 20 yards.

I know the Referee and he was trying to persuade the Assistant that it was at worst a Yellow but he wouldn't have it and promised to report the Ref if he didn't send him off.

The assistant in question whose name I forget had at one point in his career been heading for the top but had somewhat gone off the rails and had spent that season trying to make a name for himself on the odd occasions he turned up.

If I recall correctly he never officiated in Cheshire again after that fateful evening, not even in parks football

Stuart Coburn should have been sent off in the critical Unibond match at Blyth at the end of the 03-04 season when he handled outside the area and started cursing the linesman in the 93rd min after we'd come back to 2-2 from 2-0 down.

John Wood did get sent off but against Alty for Chorley in a PSF in 1978.

Willy Mailey for Middlewich against Alty in CSC in 77?

Phil Taylor came closest to the correct answer.....but, then again, he above anyone should remember dodgy refereeing decisions!

ALTRINCHAM (1) 1 HYDE UNITED (2) 2
UniBond Challenge Cup Match,
Monday, 18th November 2002

Not only did Altrincham go out of the UniBond Challenge Cup, 1-2 against Hyde United at Moss Lane last night, they had Richard Acton and Peter Band sent off. Troy Hayder scored a strange opening goal after just 3 minutes following a goalmouth melee, before Alty's 17 year-old debutant striker Steve Lunt netted a fine volleyed equaliser (11 mins). Just a minute later Meszaros was given plenty of space to drive home a shot from the right of goal to restore Hyde's lead. Despite a lot of possession Altrincham could not score in a second half. Then in the second and last minute of added time Richard Acton caught a punt from the Hyde keeper just outside his own box as Foster closed on him. Referee Tarry sent him off then, after the whistle had gone at the end of the game, he also showed Peter Band a red card for a verbal offence.

Jezza,

A very respectable effort....but I have to say that I am beginning to suspect that it was one of those matches that you used to film on your mobile phone for subsequent insertion on the STAR website.....
