Anyone good at maths or working out betting odds?
« on: September 25, 2012, 07:28:58 PM »

I received an e-mail from BetFred regarding the Euromillions draw. This is what they are offering for a £1 stake. It looks good to me.

1 correct - 8/1
2 correct - 100/1
3 correct - 1,000/1
4 correct - 25,000/1
5 correct - 150,000/1

All odds on lotteries are rubbish.

Five correct looks very wrong to me - the odds will be much much longer........5 from 50, assuming only five are drawn (I have never seen it or played it) will be easily over 2 million to 1.........I wont do the maths - trust me

Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

Oh a maths question yippee (yes I'm sad like that)

Are there 50 numbers and you pick 5 of them and 5 are drawn?  Also do you have to get exactly 1 right for your 8/1 or  1  or more than 1 right?

If you have to get exactly the right number right your odds are:

14.22 to 1
149.31
2,140.16
23,541.78
2,118,760

Yes there are 50 numbers. You pick 5 (5 are drawn) if you get exactly one right you get paid 8/1. If you get more than one you get the odds shown. So for example if you get 3 right you will get £1000 plus your £1 stake making a profit of £1000. I thought it looked good because i play every week and i'm sure i get one number at least once a month. Also this BetFred game is a unit stake of £1 instead of the Euromillions which costs £2

So they are offering a good deal for 4 numbers but a bad deal for anything else.

If you can get one a month then go for it but statistically that makes you very lucky!

Fred Done is good at working out betting odds and he thinks you should put a shed load of money on it

Oh dear - the shame - Maths graduate hangs head for posting complete &*^%&.  Credit to Mick for showing me up in PM rather than deserved public humiliation.

I will redeem myself by pointing out that the odds quoted are for getting all the numbers you chose correct - so to get 8-1 you pick one number and it has to come up (actual chances 10-1)
