Title: Darlington Match Thread
Post by: robininstockport on August 21, 2019, 08:52:04 AM
First game of the season for me, buzzing to be going but a tad apprehensive.

Picking a team as someone from the outside but read most reports, posts and seen some vids/Altytv

                     Drench

White  Jones  Hannigan  Hampson

             Mullarkey  Richman

  Johnson    Hancock    Hemmings

                  Hulme

Nice to have the attacking threat of Arnold and Walters on the bench as scoring seems to be the problem

Alty 2-0 Darlingon. Hulme Jones

Williams for Mullarkey and that looks about right. I'd definitely start Richman ahead of the unconvincing Branson, and Harrop gave us extra energy on Saturday - he could become our super-sub. I can't emphasise too strongly how much we're missing Jake Moult though.

I think it is a good shout starting Mullarkey as a DM. He has presence, can play out and appears a fit lad. Not been too impressed with Branson.

Been saying for a few weeks we should try mullarkey in midfield....he's a class act but will be lost sitting on the bench waiting for tom or jones to get injured....

Williams is better pushed forward in midfield rather than spraying hopeless hopeful balls from the edge of his own box so maybe try him and mullarkey much as I'm a ringo fan.....

I think our problems are all about the midfield front two in not protecting the defence or linking up with the forwards creating.......the front 4 and back 5 should be good enough to win the league with a decent cm pairing...

I agree with this.

Great second half. Respect to the lads.

Still think Dens over white, who sold Hannigan short which resulted in a red and injury.

We were quality second half.

JJ in net,the smallest player? What the hell. Not arsed if he was shattered.

With JJ in net they had several options, one was whack it in the top corner with ease and at this level players can. With someone like Branson then they debate shooting and also he may have got to it. That was an awful decision.

However JJ was class today. Always better on the left.

Great battling display hope Drench and Hannigant aren't too badly injured

Was it White or Richman who stitched hannigan up?

Can't have a go  for not holding on but beyond frustrating.

Johnson mom by a mile but not a keeper material.

Special credit to Hampson who kept Rivers quiet and Peers who did a job when he came on.

Feel for Hemmings who was sacrificed, I'd have brought Harrop off.

Would have settled for a point at HT but the way it panned out is a kick in the bollox

Great resilience when we went down to 10, in fact I thought we were better.

Needless fouls cost us again today in and around the box. But putting JJ in goal was suicidal. Having said that we sat to deep when we went to 9 and invited them on.

Very frustrating.... Indifferent start to the season continues.

We were better with 10 , which means we need to step up our tempo.

We seem to be sitting too deep each game. With 10 we pushed on and created problems.

The argument is that teams are now pressing us high or we are giving too much respect and sitting too deep . How we play, we need our full backs to drive forward.

We need to play higher up the pitch and drive down the wings.

I agree.....this season teams press us in our own half and we seem to struggle to break out....often hitting long balls that defenders eat for breakfast......first half today was like this

Take a point, but gutted how they achieved it....another free kick outside the area and an obvious attempt on goal given the goalkeeping situation....why nobody on the line or Branson or Mullarkey in goal ?
Good for Jordan get off the mark

Such a gritted performance after a poor start.

Big question marks over JJ in goal. Anyone but JJ. He could have been a solid out all to run down the clock.

Poor start continued sadly. Need to keep our leads.

At no point in football do you put your smallest player in net. Their equaliser was an easy call and could have been prevented, even with 9 men. The foul was silly.

A point each probably about fair in the end.
Not sure why Hannigan was sent off, seemed like a 50-50 challenge, will need to see that on Alty TV. Odd.
Hope he's fit again soon, very solid CB who we need. Same goes for the keeper, just seemed to get injured out of nowhere, leaving us well exposed.
Pleased for Jordan, hopefully he'll kick on with more goals now. JJ worked his tripe off and deserved MoM.

We need more goals from somewhere - looks like 7 goals from 6 games so far.
Say it again but refs (at this level in particular) are so random you need a good 2 goal lead to avoid the bizarre impact of their decisions on the result. We're barely getting 1 goal per game.

I suppose we could appeal it, but if the injury is a bad one we could make matters worse if the FA (or whoever) get uppity with a challenge!

It was a blatant red, either a dangerous challenge or last man.

No complaints from me

Ten off York and we're only a month in. Let's hope for a Stockport style run if we are to finish similar to last seaso.

I expected mid-table consolidation last season, and a play-off challenge this season, not the other way round.

I think alty tv replay confirms it was a 50/50 and tom got there first.
Club should appeal it.

I have just seen the Hannigan challenge on Alty TV and it is a clear red card for a two footed challenge.

Viewed head-on the Hannigan challenge appeared to me the epitome of recklessness. As soon as it happened I felt sure he would get a red, given the wording of the current laws, & there wasn't really any reason to argue the toss.
