THE NON-LEAGUE PAPER

In Sunday's paper:

Altrincham legend Stuart Coburn looks back on a week in which he became the club's record appearance holder

Identify this Alty game/the away ground:

The FA Cup - 2014/15: Rewind - Quarter-Final Classics

14th March 1987

Arsenal v Watford

Alas, Mister Sinnott was only selected as one of the Watford substitutes, however, you do catch a few glimpses of him (and his luxuriant head of hair) in one of those curious transparent porches which used to act as the dugouts at Highbury:

Altrincham FC First Team / Wanted: your favourite memories of Stuart Coburn
« on: February 19, 2015, 03:18:57 PM »

You may well have noticed that Stuart Coburn is now just three more games away from overtaking John Davison as the holder of the record number of appearances for Altrincham FC.

In anticipation of this impending milestone, the club are planning a special commemorative programme in honour of Stuart's achievement and I have volunteered to assist Grahame Rowley with its compilation.

Consequently, I would be delighted to receive your favourite memories of Stuart's career with the Robins with a view to including some of them in the proposed celebratory issue of the Robins Review e.g. reminiscences/recollections about a particular incident, game, save, performance (highs and lows!) or penalty save....and, naturally, that goal at Runcorn.

All anecdotes about the great man are welcome, whether they relate to him either on or off the pitch.

Any photographs of Stuart would be most welcome, too (especially any images of him from those days when he had a full head of hair!).

This is your opportunity to pay tribute both to Stuart's immense contribution to the cause of Altrincham FC and the man himself.

Please email your submissions to me at:

towerofsong@btinternet.com

Alternatively, send them via the Private Message facility on this forum (or even track me down in the main stand at the next home match and hand over your written contribution in person).

Incidentally, I would prefer it if the aforementioned procedures are followed rather than just posting your memories on this thread, thereby enabling an element of surprise to be maintained for when the programme eventually appears (it is currently scheduled for the Wrexham fixture on Saturday, 14th March 2015) .

(Memo to Stuart Coburn: please, don't get sent off in the next two games.....).

Many thanks, in anticipation.

Barry Pikesley.

The best contribution wins a signed photograph of Richard Acton.

Sir Alex to Stuart: "Until I read your name badge, I thought that you were Fabien Barthez."

Altrincham FC First Team / Today's Altrincham FC trivia question
« on: January 23, 2015, 06:22:46 PM »
A fairly gentle one, I suspect but here goes.....

What feat was John King the first to accomplish and Michael Twiss the last to achieve?

187

......to succeed John Davison as the holder of Altrincham FC's record number of appearances:

John Davison: 672 (+6 as sub).

Stuart Coburn (as at 18th January 2015): 670 (+2 as sub).

From John Laidlar's website:

MACC GAME DATE

The Macclesfield Town v Altrincham league game, postponed from 24 January owing to Altrincham's continuing involvement in the FA Trophy, has been rearranged for Tuesday, 10 February, at 7.45pm.

189

One for those of us of a certain vintage who happen to wander these pages.

I've only just realised that on this date four decades ago, I was watching Alty secure that famous draw at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Third Round.

Definitely an evening for raising a glass to John Hughes et al.

Altrincham FC First Team / John Pendlebury RIP
« on: December 21, 2014, 07:19:32 PM »

An Altrincham FC Director during the 1970s, as I recall.

I think that his butcher's shop used to be located on Stamford Park Road.

I'm sure that George Heslop will remember him:

James Norwood sent off in the 83rd minute against FC Halifax Town last night.

There are now stories that both Dale Bennett and Eddie Oshodi also received red cards following this post match fracas:

If this is correct, then they would have three players suspended for the match against us on Saturday.

Altrincham FC First Team / Mike Williams retires
« on: November 22, 2014, 06:06:39 PM »

From John Laidlar's Matchday Updates:

"Alty lose another man at  half time as tannoy announces retirement of Mike Williams through injuries."

Altrincham FC First Team / We were crap
« on: November 02, 2014, 05:00:43 PM »

Lee Sinnott in today's issue of the Non League Paper:

"I asked the players to play with tempo and be ruthless in their box.

We did neither.

We were crap but still should have won with those gilt-edged chances.

I would be upset at losing to a relegation candidate if it was March but at least we're only in November."
