Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Proper newspaper match report
« on: October 14, 2009, 11:09:44 AM »

Any idea who the author of this match report is though?

Doesn't one of Alty's Press Officers, John Edwards, usually provide the Messenger with copy?

Cult, Just spoken to the Messenger, and the match report in question was submitted by John Laidlar. Thought that would be the case, as John normally takes care of match reporting in his inimitable style, both for the Messenger and Alty website, while I speak to GH on Tuesday or Wednesday and file a quotes-driven back page piece for the paper. Don't know why they don't put his name on it, but there we are. Mind you, you can probably tell it's JL from the incisive, insightful content. His piece was certainly the way I saw the match. I thought it was a cracking afternoon.

For years the Messenger was rubbish for us..then it became really good.

I see now..that will be JL's piece.

I hope it doesn't go back.  The backpage was great (although again done by John)  last week but the online presence is virtually nil.
Just so you know...It is true Connor has moved on to Warrington, and the word, initially, from the Messenger's editorial department was they were not going to replace him. That still appears to be the case. I was concerned it would mean no coverage in the paper, and so volunteered to provide a back page piece each week, with John Laidlar supplying match reports inside. This I have done every week, interviewing GH in his office after games I've been able to attend or otherwise phoning him the following morning. I am glad Ecky thought last week's was 'great' (yes, it was mine, not JL's - the by-line was wrong, due to a computer cock-up). I would like to think that, in the paper at least, there is a reasonably thorough service, in terms quotes from the manager about matches played and matches coming up, and about injury updates. I hope that's the case, anyway. Unfortunately, I live outside the Messenger's circulation area these days, so don't see it, but they always tell me the stuff is going in when I phone to check they've got it. I also did a story on the Slim For Alty campaign last week which appeared on the news pages and hopefully counted as more good publicity for the club. All this is unpaid, needless to say, but I am more than happy to do it. Their website is a shambles, admittedly, but there's not much I can do about that, because I don't have any access to it. I will have a word with them, though, because it would be simple enough to use the copy supplied by myself and John on the web as well as in the paper. Finally, I hope this doesn't sound as if I've taken exception to any of the views expressed on this particular topic. I haven't. I just wanted to inform everyone of what has happened since Connor moved on.

Ecky would not appear on the front of SAM holding a pork pie and a tenner as they dont make Pork Pies big enough.

only joking, think I am bigger than you mate, i had to move off pork pies to kebabs just to keep my stamina up. Mind you the wife doesnt mind  :o

Watch out for next week's Messenger - all will be revealed...

Stuart Hall - by a mile

Is he still going ?

He is still going and is beginning to look as eccentric as he sounds. He covered Everton's game with Hull for BBC Radio FiveLive last Saturday and flounced through the press room wearing a huge tweed peaked cap and full-length brown fur coat, as favoured by well-heeled women in the middle of the last century. I kid you not.

Yes, plus GH has to stand by the touchline, glaring at the referee and pointing at his watch ...

Altrincham FC First Team / Channel M this morning

Sorry about the timing, guys. It turned out to be about 7.50 this morning, rather than 7 o'clock, but Colin was there on the sofa, along with the fan who nominated him for the unsung hero of the season award, even if the interview was a bit on the brief side. Also, Alty were described as the Manchester United of non-League football by the Manchester Evening News sports editor Pete Spencer!...

Altrincham FC First Team / Channel M tomorrow
« on: August 06, 2008, 05:02:23 PM »
Any early-risers among you may like to know that Colin Little is due to appear on Channel M at 7.00 tomorrow morning. He has been named Channel M-Manchester Evening News unsung hero of last season, for his goalscoring exploits in the midst of a relegation struggle, and will be at the station's city centre studio along with the unnamed fan who nominated him. There will be an official awards ceremony in due course (not sure when), so I guess this will just be an interview to discuss how he managed to score so many, in what were obviously difficult circumstances for the team, what the award means to him, etc, etc. Channel M can be found on Sky channel 203, and a very senior figure on the Evening News sports desk assures me it is going out at 7 in the morning (note how I've covered my tracks in case you set the alarm and switch on, only to find no sign of Colin ...)

The story has also been given some prominence on BBC online, if anyone's interested. Go on to www.bbc.co.uk/sport then click on football, then on non-league. It has been the lead item on the page for the past 24 hours or so. Now relegated to second billing, alongside a Burton Albion story. Just click on the first sentence, and it will open up the whole piece.

The truth is that Mark was one of the names on GH's wanted list before advertising his availability on Facebook. As Grahame Rowley observed: 'Our manager knows his football but has probably never heard of Facebook!' Not exactly a PR stunt, as I'm sure it was a genuine attempt by Mark to get fixed up with another club, but maybe a little bit of journalistic licence came into play when the story appeared on BBC sport online, Sky sports, etc. They are always looking for something a little different, and if it gets people reading about Alty, and what's happening at Moss Lane, it can't be all bad. Anyway, Brian Flynn and I have got to justify our existence some way ....
