Altrincham FC First Team / Re: We want Nicky back campaign
« on: November 02, 2016, 11:26:34 PM »
So relating precisely what happened in an attempt to sign a player everyone wanted at the club is poor communication? I'm at a loss to understand that. What should have been done? Claim we had no interest in Nicky and Harrogate are welcome to him? Ignore it completely and show scant regard for the interests of supporters who would rightly be up in arms at being kept in the dark? It's an accurate account of a topic, Nicky's future, that has been debated at great length on the forum. Difficult to know what to do for the best when criticism is so scathing, regardless of the stance adopted.

The choice was to say what happened and keep people informed or remain silent and keep them in the dark. The facts are what they are. Some clubs have wealthy backers, and that's fairly well known, so we're not exactly showing our hand or revealing something that isn't common knowledge. One of the main criticisms of late has been a lack of communication from the top, but this was a well-intentioned attempt to let everyone know why the widely-shared hope Nicky might return to Alty won't be happening. Much as the message wasn't what we wanted to hear, I would have thought the insight and openness might have been welcomed, rather than ridiculed.

John Edwards indicated on Radio Robins last night that there would be a full update on the injured and departed players in the coming days.

It shouldn't take this long, the lines of communication are terrible.

I agree. It was in response to my criticism of the lack of information from the club that John said an update was coming - I suspect in (slow) response to the many critical posts on here.
In the interests of clarity and fairness, I'd like to make one or two points, because a lot of the criticism on this thread has been unjust and, in some cases, downright inaccurate. To suggest news of injuries, fitness, suspensions, whatever, is deliberately withheld is just plain wrong. Going back to the days of Grahame Heathcote and then Ken McKenna, when I started as press officer, I've always interviewed the manager after a game, asked for team news as well as reaction to events on the pitch and then submitted the interview in full for use on the website. This season has been a little different, as other matters have overshadowed the usual everyday stuff, such as Neil Young making one signing after another then resigning. For each signing, I received a name and a one-sentence quote. It was up to me to research the player for background information and put together a reasonably detailed press release. Similarly, when Neil resigned, an appropriate statement had to be devised, followed by further information about the search for a new manager. That search ended 11 days ago, with the appointment of Jim Harvey. An initial same-day website article announcing Jim's arrival was followed within 24-48 hours by an in-depth interview with him. Since then, a week has elapsed. I agree supporters are fully entitled to expect news of injuries and availability, but what people don't seem to realise is I was working on it. You are out of order Laurence (Leon) in suggesting I'd only put together an injury update as a response to your criticism on Radio Robins. That was the inference in your post. Certainly, you went on to say you 'suspected it was a (slow) response to the many critical posts'. Again, absolutely wrong. I asked about injuries and availability last week, but the response, quite reasonably, was that we didn't want to alert the opposition to who might or might not be doubtful. That happens at all levels of football, week-in week-out. It was a response I became accustomed to from Premier League managers throughout my time as a sports writer. It's simply a case of timing, not deliberately keeping supporters in the dark, and the correct timing for releasing injury information was after the Nuneaton game, which was duly done. Also, for those wondering about social media, we do make use of it. Everything I send to John Laidlar for the website, I also send to Simon Brotherton, and he does a great job of posting on Facebook and Twitter. I'm not averse to criticism, if it is merited and informed. Additionally, a bit of realism wouldn't go amiss. If we could afford to employ a PR/press person, it would be reasonable to expect a daily flow of news and information. As it is, it's all done on a voluntary basis. Even so, I'd still hazard a guess our output of news and views at least matches other clubs of a similar standing.

John, my sincere apologies. Nothing that I said on here or on RR was intended as a criticism of you. What I was trying to say was that I'd mentioned on commentary that I wasn't sure where we were up to with certain injuries and that just gave you the cue to tell people an update was coming - I wasn't suggesting it was my comment that occasioned the whole thing. And my speculation that the update had been motivated by criticism on the forum was again not aimed at you but at the people who provide you with the information. That though was pure speculation and, it would seem, just plain wrong. So again, my apologies on that score.

I've never doubted that you and JL and Simon all post the information you get from the club as quickly as you can and I think you all do a great job. Your points about not wanting to tip the wink to other clubs and what a frantic time it's been are also good ones. But I do still wonder whether the club generally gives us, the fans, as much information as it could and as other equivalent clubs seem to. It feels at times like they don't but I don't know. Maybe we're actually more forthcoming than other clubs and this is just my frustration at this season coming out in other ways? Suffice it to say that knowing now that a fair few of our injured players are close to a return has made me feel a deal better about our prospects.
No worries, Laurence, thanks for the response. It does matter to me that things are done as professionally as possible on the press and media front, and it does therefore irritate and frustrate me sometimes when people occasionally rush to judgement without necessarily having all the facts to hand. That said, I'd be the first to admit there is always room for improvement, and I am doing my best to try to increase the flow of news and information to the website. Believe me, I'll keep striving, because obviously I'd much rather have positive feedback than dissatisfaction over our efforts to communicate.

Guys, it's not a swop, as Airbus never actually signed Bassangue. Despite recent publicity, the deal was never done. The story - and it's two signings, by the way - will be on the website any minute now.

Suffered slight tear to his thigh in the Halifax game. Not too serious, so should be back before long.

« on: August 09, 2016, 10:22:34 AM »
No, of course the article wasn't lifted from the Burnley Telegraph. Give me some credit. As always when asked to announce a new signing, I did some research on the player to ensure the article sent to the website contained as much information about him as possible. The Burnley Telegraph, the Lancashire Telegraph and countless other publications and media outlets reported that our new loan signing broke Darren Campbell's 200 metres schools record two years ago. No reason to disbelieve them, so I included it in my piece, as it was obviously relevant to the fact that he possesses lightning pace.

I can find no evidence to back up this statement "could have pursued a career in athletics after smashing Darren Campbell's national schools record time in the 200 metres two years ago."

For a start Darren Campbell did not hold the National Schools record for 200m; for another Khius only has times in the database for 100m and none for 200m; and finally I watched Adam Gemili set a blistering new schoolboys U20 record at Derby in 2012, whilst my son was dong the High Jump...

Khius was the 7th fastest 100m runner in the country at U15 in 2012 though -so definitely fast
Well you'd better take it up with the Burnley Telegraph and all sorts of other publications, who all reported that he 'smashed' Campbell's 200m schools record.

First time I've seen those.

Good cross and header for our first goal. Poor defending for theirs.

Our penalty was blatant, two footed from behind by the keeper, he can have no complaints.

Unsure what their penalty was for? Looks like our man trapped the ball and their striker went sprawling over a leg that was controlling the ball? Poor decision.
Exactly what I said about their penalty on radio robins live at the time, without the benefit of any replays. It was that obvious, and I couldn't believe it when the referee pointed to the spot. There was no evening up to be done, either. That would imply some doubt about our award, when there was none whatsoever. Shocking decision.

Top man, Pete - on the ball, as ever! One other thing, folks, if you see a reference, in this week's Messenger, to the game being at Alsager with a 7.15 pm kick-off, please disregard it. It's wrong, though it's not the Messenger's fault. Witton were always the opponents, but it was originally scheduled for Alsager, with a slightly earlier starting time. By the time I was told the venue and kick-off had changed, it was too late for the Messenger, as the paper had already gone to print. Anyway, to reiterate, it's Witton Albion at their ground on Monday, 7.30 ko.

Altrincham FC First Team / Another signing
« on: June 22, 2016, 07:30:35 PM »
Dear all,
Below is the press release, currently on the official club website and social media, telling of manager Neil Young's latest signing, as well as a further significant addition to be confirmed shortly.

Altrincham's joint press and media officer John Edwards writes: Neil Young has increased his attacking options for the new season by signing striker Danny Hattersley from FC Halifax Town.

The 6ft 3in frontrunner is eager to recapture the form that attracted the attention of several Football League clubs a couple of years ago and is confident he can do it in Altrincham colours after agreeing to add his height and power to Young's new-look Robins squad.

Reflecting on his latest acquisition, Alty boss Young commented: 'I'm very happy to be able to bring Danny to the club, as he is someone I have tried to sign at my previous two clubs. He brings good experience, even though he is only 24, and although his move to Halifax never really worked out, the fact remains that, only 18 months ago, he was being looked at by Football League clubs.

'He has so much to offer, and, given confidence and matches, I think he will be a great addition to our squad. At only 24, 6ft 3in tall and hard-working, he fits the profile of player we are looking to bring to the club.

'We have also agreed a contract with an experienced holding midfield player from the Football League who can also play at centre-back. Once his current contract has finished, we will be able to announce that one as well.'

Hattersley's ability has never been in question, and when Southport signed him from Stockpot County for an undisclosed fee, then-Sandgrounders manager Alan Wright said: 'We have got a real talent on our hands. Danny has all the attributes to be a major force at our level and further up the football pyramid.'

Halifax loaned the Bradford-born forward to Chester last November, and though he failed to score in his two-month stay, he was widely credited with being instrumental in helping fellow-striker Ross Hannah bag seven goals in their eight appearances together.

It's that knack of making an impact for others as well as himself that Young hopes to bring to the fore and put to full use as his rebuilt Alty squad head for what promises to be an intriguing campaign in the Vanarama National League North.

Altrincham FC First Team / Signing
« on: June 18, 2016, 05:40:42 PM »
This press release, below, should be on the club's Facebook and twitter pages now and on the website shortly. We have a picture of Callum holding an Alty shirt that should also be on the website soon.

Altrincham’s joint press and media officer John Edwards writes: Neil Young has added a left-back to his array of new signings after snapping up teenage prospect Callum Charlton from Huddersfield.

Bradford-born Charlton, 19, has the versatility to operate anywhere on the left flank, and Alty boss Young welcomed him to The J.Davidson Stadium by saying:

‘Callum is a left-back who can also play as a winger. He is very quick and dynamic and will fit in well here.’

The pacey left-sided specialist first took the eye at Brighouse Town and joined Championship side Huddersfield on a one-year contract 12 months ago, after impressing during a six-week trial.

Huddersfield’s development coach Frankie Bunn said at the time: ‘Callum did well in his trial period with us and has potential that is worth exploring, so we are delighted he has joined us.

‘He possesses genuine pace – a good attribute for any player who likes to get forward – trickery and a decent delivery.’

When Charlton became available at the end of his Huddersfield contract, Young wasted no time strengthening Alty’s left flank and adding to a new-look squad that is rapidly taking shape ahead of the new season.

Just to say, this is the updated, ever-so-slightly amended version of the press release. In the original, I said Neil Young brought Sean Miller through the youth system at Chester before handing him his first-team debut. Neil did, indeed, give him his first senior outing but insists he can't take the credit for his rise through the youth ranks...

Altrincham press and media officer John Edwards writes that: Neil Young has increased his attacking options for next season with the acquisition of free-scoring right-sided midfielder Sean Miller from Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Pacey winger Miller, a multi award winner in his time with the Nomads, becomes the latest addition to a rebuilt Altrincham squad that is rapidly taking shape for the new Vanarama National League North campaign.

A graduate of Chester's youth system who was given his breakthrough at senior level by Young, Miller, who turned 21 last month, made it into the first team squad towards the end of the 2013-14 season.

He joined Connah’s Quay that summer and made an immediate impact, scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances and virtually sweeping the board when individual awards were dished out by the club and the league.

At the club’s presentation evening, he picked up a hat-trick of gongs after being voted players’ player of the year and supporters’ player of the year and finishing top scorer.

On top of that, he was named Welsh Premier League young player of the year at the league’s annual meeting.

Young had no hesitation snapping him up for a second time, after hearing of his availability, and the Alty manager said: ‘Sean is a player I worked with at Chester, where, after he came through the youth system, I gave him his senior debut.

‘He subsequently moved on to Connah’s Quay Nomads, where, 12 months ago, he was named Welsh Premier League young player of the year.

‘He is quick and direct. He has a great attitude, wants to do well and, at just 21, has plenty of time to continue his development.’

Altrincham FC First Team / Latest signings
« on: June 06, 2016, 08:45:24 AM »
For those who may not have seen it on Facebook or twitter, here is the press release in full, re our latest signings. It was partly reproduced on a different thread.

Transfer news from Altrincham press and media officer John Edwards: Neil Young has further strengthened his new-look Altrincham squad by welcoming three more new signings to The J.Davidson Stadium.

The Alty manager has snapped up 28-year old striker Craig Hobson from Chester, versatile former Barnsley and Shrewsbury defender Sam Patterson from Bradford Park Avenue and tough-tackling centre-back John Cyrus from Frickley.

‘Sam has had experience of the league we are playing in next season and, at 22 years old, fits the profile of what we want at the club,’ said Young. ‘Craig will give us experience up front and is a hard-working lad with a fantastic attitude.

‘He probably didn’t play as much as he would have liked last season, but there’s no question he has plenty to offer. He’s a grafter who wants to do well, and, at 6ft 2in, he’ll provide height and strength up front,

‘As a target man, he also gets his share of goals, and he’s won a couple of man-of-the-match awards for his performances in FA Cup ties at Chester. It was Steve Burr who signed him for Chester, not me, but I did try to take him on loan at Stockport last season.

‘John is a tough, physical centre-half who has had a number of clubs looking at him, so I’m delighted he has chosen us. He can make the step up, no problem, and I am looking forward to working with him.

‘He is still young, in his early 20s, and I am confident he can fulfil his potential as an Alty player.’

Patterson, who is equally comfortable at right-back or as a holding midfielder, started out with Barnsley and signed a one-year contract at Shrewsbury last August, with the option of a second year.

It enabled him to link up again with former Barnsley assistant-boss Micky Mellon, and he made two Football League Trophy appearances, before leaving the Shrews in January and rejoining Bradford Park Avenue for the remainder of the season.

Bustling frontrunner Hobson joined Chester from Guiseley two years ago after previously scoring six goals in 26 appearances for Stockport.

Cyrus forged a reputation as a commanding central defender at Frickley and was voted player of the year 12 months ago after clocking up 51 appearances during the season and scoring twice.

Ex-Chester boss Young has wasted no time reshaping Alty’s squad, after recently being appointed successor to Lee Sinnott, and plans still more recruits. He wants another striker and midfielder and hopes to complete a deal for a left-back in the next week.
