PHIL BOLLAND

Top of southports "hitlist" apparently.

He'd be a great signing if we could get him, bolland and young at the back would be quality.

Bolland is still top of Brabin’s hit list
Jun 11 2008 by Philip Kirkbride, Midweek Visiter

SOUTHPORT’S chances of signing Phil Bolland’s are rated as 50-50 by boss Gary Brabin.

The Sandgrounders manager has revealed that Port’s unfortunate exit from the Blue Square North play-offs in May to Stalybridge Celtic has put the Bolland (pictured) transfer in doubt.

Released by Wrexham at the end of the season, a number of clubs are interested in the former Port favourite but Brabin is confident the experienced defender will choose Haig Avenue.

Brabin has reiterated that he is not panicking about the lack of transfer activity and remains adamant that players of Bolland’s quality will be brought into the club.

He said: “I’m not going to be bullied or pushed into bringing any player into the club, I’m determined to bring in quality.

“We’ve got a few things in the pipeline but I don’t want to build people’s hopes up and then have them disappointed if it doesn’t come off.

“Phil Bolland is one of the pack of players I want to sign and I’m speaking to him all the time but it’s a massive decision for him, which I fully respect.

“I’m just pleased that he is considering us because Phil is still a quality League footballer. However, I would say it’s 50-50 at the moment if he signs or not, he’s still got ambition and if we had been promoted then he would have signed straightaway.”

Meanwhile, John Doolan is still to put pen to paper but Brabin has said that a verbal agreement is in place and the midfielder will sign when he returns from holiday.

There are no new developments on the immediate futures of out of contract players Chris Holland, Matt Hocking and Neil Prince.

Brabin said: “It’s a bit cat and mouse with all the players at the moment because they are still weighing up their options.”

And he is a Southport legend, played in one of their best ever teams. I think that may influence his decison as well.

In fairness though, GH did give him his big break in SSemi Pro fotball away at Welling in 1995.

He is also, inadvertently, the holder of one of the the funniest Alty quotes of all time (first man to break the news of maunders shutting the club).
