Historically Altrincham was spelt with a "G".

Alt = High
Tring = was the clan leader of the town ( I think)
Ham = Village

So it became Altringham = meaning the village on the hill run by Tring.

But was subsequently changed to Altrincham.

The cheek of it.

Well I found it interesting. Although I thought Altrincham was in a kind of valley, not on a hill !

I think the hill bit refers to the old market place which was the centre of the town.

Also if you are at lymm roundabout you can see the tower of St Margarets chuch up on the hill. The town was used as a vantage point to view the land around

I will get my coat !!!

The church you can see on the top of the hill from the Lymm roundabout is St. Mary's in Bowdon, and St. Margaret's strictly speaking is in Dunham Massey (if only just).

The "C" came about because when all towns in England had to be registered, Alty's town clerk mispelt the name, I think this was in the 18th centuy but could have been as late as the 19th Century. A history of the name of the town can be found in the book "Bygone Altrincham"

Alt - is a Latin term (altus) while ham is saxon.

Local historian Basil Morrison once told me that he used to say in talks that the soil was like custard so was good for the rhubarb.

Incidently the Webb lettuce originated in Kendal and there is (was) an Altrincham carrot

As you've mentioned Kendal, got to say that you're lucky people just spell your name wrong.  Whenever we travel away we're lucky ifanyone even knows where Kendal is!!  Best of luck to Alty for the season by the way, especially the Gazelle.

Excuse me but Liverpool is the city of culture is it not..........Oh sorry can't have Liverpool and culture in same sentance can you.
To add to all this local agricultural history, Clibrans was the company who had the site in Delaheys Road and other in Hale and Hale Barns. They were seed merchants and devoloped many vegetables with local names eg Timperley Early Rhubarb etc. They also had a plant and gardening shop in Altrincham when I was knee high to a grasshopper, and Walter Jones was our star centre forward.

I'm sure it used to be that in the mid 60's - in fact I've still got a paper car sticker which says that tucked into one of my old scrapbooks.  ;)
I believe the name was abbreviated after the early 80's.  ::)

I used to live on 'Bowden View Lane'

I often wondered why it was spelled incorrectly, but maybe someone just got it wrong when registering the road or town. Now the big question is, which one is right? I wont sleep until this is resolved!

Lots of different spellings and pronounments.....it's enough to give us a real identity crisis;

The name Altrincham is Old English meaning 'the homestead of Aldhere’s people' from inga a group of people and ham a homestead, village or estate. It probably has seventh century origins from the early form of the name. It has been spelled about 15 different ways since AD1290, including Aldheringaham.

The name of the town was spelled Altringham up to about 1800 at which time the ‘c’ spelling began to be adopted and both spellings were used until the 1930s. It was pronounced Awtrigem or Awtringeam in the nineteenth century and currently the ‘c’ in Altrincham is pronounced as a ‘g’ and outsiders often spell it as such.

I think the Alderingaham pronouncement was Tevor Brookin...MOTD circa 1978?
Awtrigem is the Welling pronouncement I presume.
