You can make a genuine error over a player's registration and be theoretically docked a limitless amount of points.

You can knowingly trade at a loss over a sustained period of years, build up hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of pounds, wipe out at least 90% of the debt (often a big chunk of which is owed to the public purse), start afresh and lose no more than 10 points.

It stinks.

I'd rather be where we are than Halifax. No matter what league we play in next year at least I know the club will still be there. We may yet end up in the BSP again next year  beacuase of Halifax anyway.

Bottom line is that the penalties for financial mis-management are not strong enough. If teams were automatically relegated no matter where -10 points would leave them and a points deduction for the following seaon maybe people would start to spend what they can afford.

I think we should really come to a heartaching decision and be honest with our expectations of Alty.
The Conference was formed with the hope of a pyramid filtering to promotion to the Football League
Situation in 1980 was :-
All Conference Clubs were Part-Time
Alty were top Non-League Club and Part-Time
No automatic promotion the Football League
We were solvent and considerd a wealthy club
We were better on the pitch than most 3rd and 4th Division Clubs
We intended going into the Football League and remain Part Time - This is what scared most 4th Division clubs as we were confident that we could compete and run on a part time budget. Clubs like Stockport, Crewe, Rochdale, Halifax, Hartlepool feared we would sound their death knell and the 4th Division would go part time.
Situation in 2008 :-
Nearly all Conference Clubs are Full time
Remainly Part time and surviving in the Conference for more than a season is unlikely.
The Football League is a dream away even for wealthy full time conference Clubs.

So what are our ambitions for Alty ?
Remain part time with the best ambition to be a struggling Conference Club ?.
Go Full Time - taking a massive financial risk - but with the hope of replacing Macc as a League Two Club?.

Excellent post redhill Alty.

I honestly cannot answer your question.

We keep saying that it is only a matter of time before more clubs go bust, but it doesn't happen: they get taken over by new owners or they get let off by the authorities with a piffling 10 point deduction and paying back some nonsense like 2.5 pence in the pound.

What I would likemto see happen (as so many before me have said) is for stricter controls (at least in the lower & non leagues)from the FA:
1) Strict wage cap
2) Minimum 10 point deduction every month they break said wage cap
3) Stricter penalties for going into administration: relegation & points deduction for new season

Carrot will not work, we need a very big stick. This could lead to more clubs going part time and less clubs extracting the urine.

Will this happen?
