Altrincham FC First Team / Re: York away in the cup
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:36:49 PM »

Could do with playing them sooner rather than later; lost the last four on the bounce and I'm sure they'll find some form before then.

And, probably, a new manager.

They all want Askey back, but hopefully the management will be too stubborn to admit their previous mistake and go for someone else totally out of their depth.

From what I have heard about the club, I very much doubt that John Askey would contemplate returning to work for that utter crackpot of a chairman/owner.

Auntie Jenny is and was my favourite person at Moss Lane forever.

I first came to watch Alty because I got tickets for free through my school. I fell in love with the club from the first game. I wrote a letter to the club thanking them for the ticket and explaining how much I'd enjoyed the day despite the loss. I received a response from Jenny inviting me down to the ground to take a tour around the club, and to meet John who was manager at the time. It was magical for an 8 year old kid to get to see behind the curtain, something I know now was a small gesture but was absolutely integral to me developing a love for the club.

Thank you Jenny for putting me firmly on the path of joy and despair that is being an Altrincham fan.

I'm shocked/sad I've not seen anything from the club on this yet.

I informed Bill Waterson of the sad news early yesterday afternoon but who on earth knows who is actually responsible for updating that club website with such information?

I note that the death of Brian Lee has been recorded.

More sad news, I'm afraid.

I've been informed that Jenny Heslop died in Wythenshawe Hospital last night.

The loss of yet another Alty stalwart.

Sincere condolences to her family and friends.

An away draw against York City would see us making two trips to the LNER Community Stadium within the space of four days.

A good but hard listen with all the crowd around. That screechy woman was very irritating.

Agreed. It was like being held captive in Guantanamo Bay and tortured with recordings of one of those dreadful women from Birds Of A Feather.

After a desperately sad week for the club, it was a blessed relief to finish it on a happier note, especially in a competition which was so close to John King's heart.

The Wigan Athletic perspective, including some reminiscences from Graham Barrow:

Very sad news. All I will say (speaking from personal experience) is that it is probably a blessing both for the great man and his family in light of the cursed affliction of dementia. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Where on earth do you start when endeavouring to pay tribute to the gargantuan contribution that he made to Altrincham FC, both on and off the field?

I recall the arrival of this colossus at Moss Lane in late November 1977. Merely five months later, he captained the Robins and scored a goal in that memorable victory in the FA Trophy Final. Those of us who were privileged to be in attendance at Wembley on that April afternoon will never forget his spontaneous goal celebration of ripping off his shirt and then joyously waving it above his head. Several hours (and pints in The Moss) later, my friend's father could be witnessed re-enacting that very incident in the front garden of a house in Hale, much to his dear wife's general bewilderment!

So many marvellous memories ensued, including his famous tussle with Ossie Ardiles at White Hart Lane in 1979; Joe Neenan's legendary right knee in 1980 and then guiding the club to a second FA Trophy triumph in 1986 (I believe that he became the first man to have both played for and managed an FA Trophy-winning team).

Onwards to that dazzling and fondly-remembered side of 1990/91; another contest with Spurs in 1995 and then, just a few months later, his pivotal role in securing the club's future after the abrupt exit of John Maunders.

The ultimate midfield competitor/hardman/enforcer (take your pick of epithet) but, as Alty Tunnel Steward rightly states earlier in this thread, the man could certainly play and his sweet left foot was often overlooked owing to the intimidating aura that surrounded him.

A towering figure in the Non League sphere and a truly one-of-a-kind character. The reminiscences and anecdotes at his funeral should be priceless.

Someone should have tapped into his career and memories and written a book about his exploits long ago. Perhaps a special one-off Robins Review could be compiled and produced in his honour?

Let's win the FA Trophy as a fitting tribute to him and his legacy.

He remains immortal in my mind, dominating the pitch in those red-and-white stripes.

"O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning."

So, to be clear, we're going to have to put a couple of contracted players on the bench instead of a couple of loans.
As said above, it will probably be a couple of youngsters.
There'll still be plenty of firepower and experience on the bench.

Our starting XL against Wrexham should be enough

Well, if we can field 40 players, I would expect us to take the tie to penalties at the very least.

So, Barry, as you're the records man, would you say I was correct in saying the Barrow game was our record fa cup crowd?

PS. I didn't just say 'Cup' as I positive there were more at the second leg of the Cheshire Senior Cup final vs Strolling Ken Barnes's Witton Albion (whatever the official figures were!)

At Moss Lane post-World War II, I'd say 'yes'.

And unlikely to be surpassed.

Wow.
I'd got it into my head that it was 7700 but as I wasn't sure, I said 7k+.
I didn't think it was that high but, as there was no segregation in those days, I do remember the "traffic jams" in the middle of the popular side when we all changed ends at half time!

Bloody hell , what a crowd !!! What a throwback , those change of ends were fun back then , wonder that crowd did'nt spill onto the pitch . Slightly before i started going as you know , but did'nt a gobby geezer called Ron McGarry score their winner .

Excerpt from one of my When We Were Kings programme articles (which were written in 2010/11):

"I sincerely hope that I am not tempting fate by citing the statistic that Barrow have accomplished only three victories at Moss Lane from a total of 31 post World War II visits to date.

The first of this trio of rare away wins occurred in an FA Cup Second Round tie back on 6th January 1968. At that juncture, the Holker Street side were under the guidance of player-manager Colin Appleton and lying in 13th position in the old English Third Division. Notwithstanding the former Oldham Athletic and Stockport County striker Bert Lister scoring a first minute goal for the Robins, Barrow eventually progressed to a Third Round home tie with Leicester City courtesy of two strikes in the 22nd and 42nd minutes respectively by Ron “Cassius” McGarry (a flamboyant character who reportedly once had his business cards printed with the legend: "Have goals, will travel") in front of an attendance of 8,462.

Incidentally, the Robins’ pre-match preparation for that fixture consisted of an overnight stay for the squad at The Bowdon Hotel on the Friday, which was preceded by manager Freddie Pye leading his players en masse to Hale Cinema in order to watch Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in The Taming Of The Shrew. I wonder whether Graham Heathcote has ever contemplated using a dose of Shakespeare as a pre-match motivational aid for inspiring his players…..?"

I hope that the board have insisted that Dinanga's transfer deal to Gateshead includes a sell-on clause.....

What was the crowd v Leyton Orient in the FA Cup? My Dad said it was absolutely rammed for that game.

I thought the biggest fa cup crowd was the over 7k we got for the game with Barrow.
Never forget the exhilaration I felt when Bert Lister put us in the lead at the Red Robin Club end (as it was then).

Brian,

The attendance for that FA Cup Second Round tie at Moss Lane back on Saturday, 6th January 1968 was 8,462.
