Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Last game of season
« on: April 06, 2023, 01:37:22 AM »
I thought that was for teams involved in playoff positions?

Basically BT want to put Wrexham on telly & the slot available was 530 which now means everyone else (even a complete dead rubber like our game) also has to kick off at 530. Good day on the beers for our fans in the SE anyway.

It's a trifle premature to dismiss our visit to Aldershot on the final day of the season as being a 'dead rubber'.

Aldershot are currently languishing merely one position above the relegation zone, five points ahead of Yeovil - whom they happen to play on Good Friday.

Whilst I would expect them to stay up, their erratic form could still place them in jeopardy on 29th April.

An utter farce, my 1 bucket list item of seeing my team at Wembley ruined by underspending on stewards.

Not ruined but merely postponed, surely...?

Bob Lee's late winning goal for Boston United in the FA Trophy Semi-Final Second Leg at York Street back in April 1985 against a then 10-man Altrincham team who had fought back from being 2-0 down.

If you want an encouraging omen, we won the competition the following season.

It looked to me as if he kept the underwhelming Hugill on purely because he was a designated penalty taker.

The stewards operating in front of the turnstile at the main stand were utterly clueless.

When a Halifax supporter asked which turnstile he needed to go to, one luminous-jacketed buffoon was directing him towards the Golf Road End until I intervened and pointed the visitor in the right direction.

Are they not briefed before a game to familiarise themselves with the stadium?

A waste of space (and money).

Will we ever have a better opportunity to get to Wembley after such an interminable absence?

That was a textbook example of how to shoot yourself in the foot by squandering so many chances during that second half to put the game to bed at 2-0.

It felt as if the Halifax supporters were seconds from booing their team off and I suspect that they cannot comprehend quite how they have managed to emerge as the victors.

With the exception of Osborne, our penalty kicks were (almost inevitably) dreadful.

Wycombe at Moss Lane in 1991 was painful enough but, in truth, it was a game that we deserved to lose.

Today was ineffably excruciating.

So, er, what happened to the scoreboard?

We were infoirmed that it was "not working".

It briefly contrived to show the clock at half-time, however it simultaneously advised us that we were playing Notts County.

Not sure how you can read too negatively into that to be honest - on a night most of us would have preferred to have called off, we got a useful workout against a strong side and I felt we really held our own.

Whilst their two goals were harsh on us, we obviously didn't take our own big chance and I suspect, as suggested, they'd have found the win anyway.

Last half hour played out like a training drill which I think suited both teams, it looks as if everyone came through fine, although Sinclair looked sore when he came off.

I thought Linney and Sinclair were bright, direct and positive - I thought Osborne was OK and we've done the Pringle thing to death, he's nowhere near as effective as a starter - and the two full backs were pretty solid. Eddy improves with every game, and it was Harry Perritt's best game by a mile since returning to us.

Josh Lundstram's performance won't have gone unnoticed from them, unfortunately - he was his absolute imperious best, what a joy he is to watch.

Play like that and we beat Halifax on
Saturday
.

Well, I profoundly hope that your confidence is well-founded, however I confess that I don't quite share your degree of faith.

In our last two matches, we have mustered a total of merely two shots on target - both of which have been from the penalty spot.

Plus our chief attacking threat is cup-tied.

At the start of the season - and again in January - many on this forum asked 'where are the goals coming from?'

We're the joint 6th highest scorers in the league.

I have faith.

Of the 59 league goals that Alty have scored this season, 36 have come from players who will not be members of the squad for the Halifax game.

Nonetheless, I still admire your faith!

It's certainly a day for Lewis Baines to emulate the great Mal Bailey at Canal Street in April 1978...

Let's hope that there's some accountability for that capricious and short-sighted decision last evening.

The details of Phil Parkinson's somewhat experimental Alty starting XI for tonight's fixture against Notts County have just leaked online:

1. Ian Senior
2. Shaun Densmore
3. Peter Densmore

4. Frank Sinclair (aiming to do his old club Wrexham a favour)
5. Danny Higginbotham
6. Neil Sorvel

7. Sir Graham Brady (who has allegedly asked for a salary of £60k per year and also reportedly demanded to be played on the right wing)
8. Kyle Perry
9. Byron Harrison
10. Morrissey

11. Johnny Marr (the first time that he has played alongside No. 10 since 1986).

We will play twice as good and lose.....not a spectacle and as the Cult said to me....scored with our only shot on target

100% efficiency rate!

Not a memorable game (and I have to say that a draw would have been the fairest outcome) but, nonetheless, I am delighted that we have finally beaten those Essex shysters.

Plus a rare sighting of a clean sheet, too.

Marriott and Lundstram were both excellent (and a tip of the hat to Baines as well) and I fear that our next major challenge is going to comprise retaining both of them.

I always find Non League Day to be a curiously unsettling experience. The attendance invariably increases and yet the atmosphere itself seems to deflate.

As a long-standing grudge-bearer, Rochdale's defeat was the perfect accompaniment to our victory.
