Title: Photo From The 70's - can Anyone Help ?
Post by: Scottie on October 16, 2007, 09:56:16 AM

The attached Photo shows myself amoungst a rum group of Alty supporters in the mid to late 70's. I am holding up the striped scarf below the Union Jack. Are any of you on this photo and if so where was it taken ? I have a feeling it was published in the old Altrincham Guardian. Can anyone help ?

Thats a great photo, it should be up in the Noel White suite. The gazelle must be on there somewhere.

I think hsmith1 may be spot on as to location. I have infront of me the programme from the Runcorn v Altrincham FA Trophy Semi Final (second leg) at Canal Street dated Saturday 8th April 1978. How did hsmith1 suspect it was Runcorn ? One of the players mentioned in the programme is one Graham Heathcote which describes him as :- A midfield player who rejoined the club after a short spell with Northwich Victoria. Graduated through the Altrincham Youth Team.  think the baby faced lad to the bottom right of my scarf is John Garbutt but the rest remain a mystery.

I'm wondering if it may actually be Moss Lane, even Golf Rd before the rear sections of the stand were replaced, they used to be asbestos cement corrugated sheets often damaged. I recall either the pink or S.A.M. doing a thing were they took a photo and the one with the ring around their head won a fiver or something? Could be one of those, hence the kids collective interest in posing for it.

I can see that piece of string that's been there for as long as I've ever been at Moss Lane at least.

there was loads of troublle at moss lane (including a copper kicked into a coma) and runcorn were looking for revenge. of course all the T**ts who had been doing the fighting in the first leg were safe at home watching world of sport, while anyone else (old men, kids, anyone) was systematically battered at canal street.
maybe i have overstated that but its how i remember it
anyone else?

The reason i thought Runcorn was the covered area was not as deep as at Moss Lane and also i remember a hole in the fence.

Runcorn away, we were put in a small area in the corner with no official segregation so one by one the Runcorn loons crept in until they had a crew then it kicked off. The wise amongst us moved away and stood in their end, seemingly unoticed but I confess sadly to leaving my old silk scarf on the coach that day taking the offer of a safe lift home instead. From the "other SW "if I recall.

Remember at the time some bother at home but to me nothing like the Scarborough semi the season before; I never saw The Stamford Park kick off though but have heard plenty of versions including the one about the copper being done. I recall a Runcorn copper mentioning this while we were hiding near him. then helpfully pointing out the Runcorn fan who he said did it!!

i really dont mean this to be a hoolie discussion but,,
runcorn at home - there  was a massing non stamford parkand a couple of skirmishes took place.  a big runcorn fan was grappling with an alty fan and a copper jumped on top of them and they all fell to the ground. cue all the rest crowding in and kicking hell out of them.
it was horrible to be a young male in alty for weeks after, the police were not happy

scarboro away and at home the previous year were bad too but for some reason i was able to be away from it all, whereas runcorn felt like it was coming for me, like they knew who you were

the more i think about this the more i realise that my rosy glow of the good old days is rubbish. particularly cup games could be awful
was anyone else at the fac 2nd round at droylesden?

I was at Droylesden and was very happy to get onthe coach in one piece, but what a celebration when we found out we had drawn spurs away.
Runcorn was frightening, the famous foxy was arrested for his own safety funny how it was always him that was attacked first wherever we went, he was (or is) just one of life's unlucky guys.

I thought the copper who was hurt was an off duty runcorn copper?

Agreed that nostalgia dulls the terror that was felt at most away games in those days but somehow there is some sort of affection for having survived it

long shot.............. jim in london based on your memories and a rough guess at the age and in an attempt to keep your name a secret in a 20 questions type way
