The Legends game sent me thinking the other day about just who is my ultimate Alty hero. The answer is obviously Ken McKenna, just a God, followed by a personal favourite Ricky Harris and therafter it's hard to split the rest up.
I don't really know wher Jackie Swindells comes into this as I never saw him play (met hime though, I was shaking nervously). For me he's kind of some father figure, a patron saint of Alty.
Pick your legend in the poll and put your 1-2-3 in the answer below. I'll put 9 legends down to start off with. If yours isn't there, don't vote just say so on your answer and I'll add anyone who's name crops up more than 3 times.
n.b. In due course we'll due a legends poll for the Tunnas and Furnivals of this world.
-
1 Showler
2 McKenna
3 Harris
-
1. Heathcote
2. Coburn
3. Andy Green
-
Meh, did you just vote 3 times there? i thought I'd limited the poll itself to just one vote.
Vote once for your ultimat legend but tell us who your 2nd and 3rd choices would be in an answer below folks basically.
-
1. Jeff Johnson
2. Jackie Swindells
3. John King
4. Graham Heathcote
-
the only one of these that i have seen play (bar staff supporters games or charity events) is coburn so thats my vote
-
I know he's not on here but clive freeman just for his 1st class threat every free kick, dont think ive seen such a consistantly good striker of the ball at this level
-
1. johnson
2. king
3. heathcote
well you can tell my age from that
johnson because of the length of service, and his attitude which made him the player he was and pulled us out of the mire again and again
the other 2 because of their playing days but also because of what they have been to this club
-
Jim in London - you are a kindred spirit !
-
us mid 40s blokes have to stand together
-
Referring to the question first, I have to say John King is the most "iconic" but my personal favourites...
1-Ricky Harris
2-Heathcote
3-Coburn
-
for me it would have to be
1) Coburn
2) Heathcote
3) Val Owen (now i know he's not on the list but when ever he's playing and we are a goal down; and it gets to 90mins, well i always think to my self if Val hits this one now from about 30yards out, what a legend he will become.)
-
What about Walter Jones, Cyril Barclay and Con Kapler
-
another mid forties wreck votes for
King,Johnson, Heathcote in any order you like
-
Another vote from a mid forties wreck,
KING, JOHNSON, HEATHCOTE, EALES.
-
Alex Stepney
-
1. Graham Heathcote
2. Stuart Coburn
3. John King
In no particular order, they have all given more than they needed to have done, both on and off the field.
-
1. Jackie Swindells (just!)
2. Johnny King
3. Brian Taylor (Who could forget "bopper"?)
-
1. Graham Heathcote
2. Jeff Johnson
3. Barry Howard
So hard to keep it to three....Kingy, Mal bailey, etc, etc
-
Barry Crowe and Barry Diamond
-
In the absence of a voting option for Tunna.....and, alas, because I never saw the legendary Swindells...
1. Jeff Johnson
A decade of phenomenal service in attack, then midfield and, finally, central defence.
2. John King
His arrival in 1977 was the catalyst that turned Alty from a good side into a team that won league championships and cups.
3. John Davison
Simply, a class act, whether at full back or in midfield.
-
(1) Ken McKenna
(2) Paul Showler
(3) Ronnie Ellis
-
Ronneeeeeeeeee Ellis. How could I leave him off the options?
Added.
-
Fantastic & enjoyable thread.
Mine are:
Heathcote (successful player & manager)
King (great character)
Swindells (the dad of a mate of mine saw him several times; was the best player he'd seen at this level)
-
I like my wingers, i will go for three not on the list two wingers and an inside foward
Kevin Ellison
Barry Howard
John Rogers
-
Jeff Johnson was immense and always 100% committed
John cing
Graham heathcote - just for free ciccs and penalties.
Those were the days!!
-
(1) Ken McKenna
(2) Paul Showler
(3) Ronnie Ellis

-
1 JOHN KING
2 JOHN ROGERS
3 JEFF JOHNSON
-
As a 50 something it has to be Jackie Swindells. Some of the goals he scored were just unbelievable but one of the best if I my recollection is correct was against Hyde at Edgeley Park in a CSC replay. I think we won 7-1 and JS got 5 of them but I always have this memory of one being him receiving a Hoddle type crossfield pass and controlling it with his thigh on the touchline by the main stand and as it dropped volleying it top corner job from about 35 yards. It may all be a dream but maybe someone could confirm it!!
Second choice would probably be Jeff Johnson and I'd have to have my old man's favourite player, Mickey Brooke as third choice!! Used to love the chats I had a few years back with Mickey in our local B&Q and the stories he used to tell me of the old days. God help anyone who asked him for help as to where anything was.....he'd send them off round the store so he could carry on telling me about some exploit of Kingy's on trips home from London after another win!!
-
Ronnie Ellis
Mal Bailey
The late, great Ivan Crossley if only for the goal line clearance v Enfield in the Trophy Final
-
Ronnie Ellis
Phil,
Don't you mean ANNA Ellis, Ronnie's wife......?!
-
1. Rogers
2. Howard
3. King
And then the rest of that 79/80 team.
Ah well, now its just me and me memories.
-
These polls are great but inevitably focus on the more recent players. I was just a young boy and only saw Jackie Swindells on a number of occasions but this man was a legend. Had he been playing today, you would have no need of this poll - it would be a one horse race! And we wouldn't be in the bottom 4!
-
Ronnie Ellis
Phil,
Don't you mean ANNA Ellis, Ronnie's wife......?!
That, Mr cult is a secret between myself and my photo album

To be fair, I did kind of mention this at the start. Sir Jackies feats actually put him above the ranks of legend really, sort of an almost mythical Alty Father figure.

A vote by proxy from Tony Spilsbury who tells me Lennie Dickinson is the best player we ever had. :)
-
Johnny Kings red and white army !
