I am not sure I ever need to go back there.

My thoughts exactly.  I thought that I must have entered a potential subject for an episode of 'Abandoned Engineering'.  Everyone attending the game was housed in the same stand on the West side of the stadium and it made it appear as if the venue was empty.   The large deserted looking East stand is missing it's roof covering but still has the twisted skeletal remains of the metal frame that used to hold it up exposed.  The running track around the pitch has seen better days and there were puddles of standing water everywhere.  There was also a big dirty looking tarpaulin sheet stretched out across the ground below where we were sat for some unknown reason and whilst many of the seats looked to have been quite recently replaced, many of them were covered with seagull sh*t.  Incidentally, It was also bloody freezing!

'Its grim up north'... as it happens grim is a good word to describe our performance.  Best leave it at that.

The tarps cover the long jump pit. There is one at the other end, I assume one is for the triple jump?I

I know nowt about athletics, but Olympics apart do spectator numbers justify an 11800 all seater stadium? The place looked well past it.

It was a major athletics venue back in Brendan Foster's day. In 1993, a crowd of almost 15,000 attended a meeting at which Linford Christie competed. The football club would be happy with 10% of that. You can tell it used to be important as it has its own station on the Tyne & Wear Metro. Past it's best now I'm afraid, but better than the massive tip it was built on !

Seem to recall the ultra-reliable John Laidlar used to provide updates when matches were covered by what is now the unofficial website
"You don't know what you've got till it's gone" as Cinderella put it. Otis Redding's take was "You don't miss your water till your well runs dry".

Should have been ahead before Thompson's error gifted them the opener. We were a poor second best after the interval, and although they got lucky when the second goal went off the post onto their guy's shin and rebounded into the net, Gateshead deserved their win.

Lundstram didn't let us down, and could turn out to be a worthwhile loanee,  but we missed having one of Williams or Richman out there. Wall put in a decent shift with some good balls played in. On the other hand I thought one of the major problems was at full back. Dens was a long way below his best, and White was barely better.

It was good to see Hannigan get through the full ninety minutes. Mullarkey was streets ahead of anybody else on the pitch.

I thought today's officials were the best we've had this season.

Gateshead are nothing special, as we saw at Moss Lane, but they're firmly in the playoff picture. That only goes to show that this league is of rather a poor standard right now. If we can't get a playoff spot something is badly wrong.

Ricky Harris did well for us on my last visit  :)

The last and only previous visit I made, we lost 1-0. Michael Rankine scored. And of course subsequently joined us.

I'd love to be fully engaged. Unfortunately I work on Friday nights.

Altrincham FC First Team / Referee accountability
« on: January 15, 2020, 11:20:29 AM »
Having considered all the circumstances of last night's postponement, especially B.4D's comments, I am forced to conclude that the referee, Adam Herczeg from (I think) Gateshead, simply didn't fancy it.

It reminds me of the famous postponement of our Trophy game at Buxton 40 years ago, when it was alleged that the referee called it off because he didn't think he'd get back home to Lincoln if it snowed again.

A lot of people were severely inconvenienced and left out of pocket by the late decision to call the game off. Spennymoor will have to pay the cost of needlessly turning on the floodlights for example. Players will have, in many cases, lost time at work.

Spennymoor's chairman's offer to fund our coach was a fine gesture, but I note his phrase "we respect the referee's decision". B.4D reckons that the ref cited "Health & Safety", and I do wonder what guidelines he may have been following.

Whilst we don't want to go back to the times illustrated by the iconic photograph of Tom Finney having an in-play cold shower, the line must surely be drawn  somewhere reasonable.

Do referees have to submit a report to the league when they postpone, and if so, how detailed is it ? Do clubs have any grounds to raise an official complaint if they feel that the decision to call off a game was unreasonable ?

Mr.Herczog would have got home in time to watch Spurs v Boro last night. Our travelling contingent didn't even have that consolation.

Everybody except the officials thought the game should have been played.
I honestly couldn’t see a problem, but who am I.

You are a loyal supporter who was prepared to sacrifice arguably up to 10 hours of your time to undertake a round trip of nearly 350 miles on a filthy winter night in order to watch your team play. However you chose to undertake that journey, it was a night when you would probably spend around £50 altogether.

Does the referee care one jot for you ? Obviously not. Utterly disgraceful.

Both of the other games in our league have been called off. A draw would therefore move us past Boston into 5th, but ideally we need to win, as they'll now have a game in hand on us - so will Brackley, but to get within three points of them would be a decent achievement - even though their goal difference is 21 better than ours.

No one seems to have mentioned Lewis Walters.
See the fourth post on this thread !

You can certainly drink in the bar, but I'm not sure that it's the same for those of us who drink at the ground side in stadia where standing is still the norm. We certainly weren't able to do it when we were last in Conference National.

Just thinking - isn't Lewis Walters' loan at Trafford up on Friday ? That gives us another wing option.

Championship clubs don't loan players to clubs four levels lower so that they can sit on the bench. However, Ethan never quite did enough to get into our starting XI and wasn't used off the bench on Saturday when all three substitutions were employed. There's a decent enough player in there, and we'll doubtless hear more of him in due course,  He needs to work more on his effort off the ball, and particularly his failure to track back, which meant that our usual link between full back and winger didn't work when he was on the pitch.

Spennymoor have lost 4 of their last 5 games, so we should be capable of winning. A draw would still be a decent result. Was going to go but don't fancy the likely weather conditions. It's an age thing.

Why did we attack the Golf Road in the first half?

Did we win or lose the toss.?........who kicked off ?

Got the impression they won the toss and decided to kick towards the chequers end

We kicked off, and Jake knocked it back.
