Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Gut feelings for saturdays AGM

Bizarrely, I have to say that I'd be more confident of us being able to avoid the relegation positions in the BS National next season than I would of us getting promoted from the BS North!

Isn't Phil Power's permatan down to his meditteranean ancestry. I seem to recall him being of Maltese decent.

UC,

I think that you may well be correct with your recollection.

I remember being out and about in Macc towards the end of the 1996/97 season (when they were bombing along and we were sliding towards relegation) and seeing a character wearing a Macc shirt with Power's number on it and the words "The Maltese Falcon" written across it.

He played in a friendly at Trafford, a game in which Roger Palmer was given a trial. We lost the game 1-0 and Palmer was never seen in an Alty shirt again.

Any idea of the date of this fixture?

Do you realise how privileged you were to see him play?!

6319
Yes indeed, Peter Stanier was that man.

According to my research, he was named as Alty's goalkeeping substitute on no less than 45 consecutive occasions.......and never once actually managed to make a first team appearance.....even with the ever-erratic Paul Collings as the first choice keeper!

Just how will our budget be able to match the lucrative salary that the mighty Nantwich Town may offer him?

Plan B: contact Martin Filson and coax him out of retirement.

6321
Why does he need a holiday anyway, he's been the worlds most tanned man since I first saw him in 1993! (Tinson not Dalton obviously ;))

Ah...but how does he compare with those great suntanned Alty players of yesteryear though?

I speak, of course, of the likes of John Davison, Barry Whitbread and the bronzed legend that was Ronnie 'Ambre Solaire' Ellis.
All of the above used to return to Moss Lane in August each year with golden tans!

Funnily enough, I never recall Mick Carmody or the great Tunna exhibiting even a hint of a suntan.....

Salt Lake City. Yeh I can imagine Pottsy getting on well with the mormon lifestyle!  ;)

Advantage: polygamy.

Disadvantage: multiple mothers-in-law.

Major drawback: having to listen repeatedly to any records by The Osmonds.

Only according to the Burton Albion forum, apparently some lad on there who knows him  has spoke to him or summat, anyone shed any light on this  ???

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the poster on the Burton Albion forum.

It looks like it's Colston Crawford, who writes reports on Burton Albion for the Derby Evening Telegraph.

He helped me out the other year when I was researching a programme article on the former Alty & Burton Albion midfielder, Doug Newton.
I have met him at Moss Lane and he certainly knows his stuff re. Burton.

So, we await his article tomorrow....

The plot thickens.....!

Ballers,

I follow your logic......but you are still incorrect!

Altrincham FC First Team / Spot the contradiction.....
« on: June 04, 2007, 03:24:25 PM »
From the Manchester Metro News article:

Alty chairman Geoff Goodwin says of the Altrincham board, "We do it for the love. We haven't got a lot of money and until someone with a lot of money comes in, Conference National is a dream. You're living in dreamland if you think you can survive in that league on a part-time basis."

Manager Graham Heathcote agreed; "It is a difficult league for part-time clubs financially and physically but you have to aim to get out of the league you are in. We have to aim to be in the Conference National and, once in, see how far up we can progress as a part-time team."

Who at the back of the class whispered "Stafford"?

Can anyone actually prove that Colin Potts has ever been technically "fit"?

I mean, even when he was at his peak for us, he always seemed to be carrying a few surplus pounds.

Tony Williams has penned an article on Alty's Alliance/Conference highlights and FA Cup/Trophy history.

Plenty of photographs of Alty at Anfield and playing against the likes of Tottenham, Orient and so forth.

Well worth investing in a copy.

If any Alty exiles are struggling to locate a copy of this issue, let me know and I'll see if I can accumulate some extra copies from local sources.
