First time we've ever played on Good Friday?
« on: January 07, 2013, 02:43:08 PM »

Good move football wise with us having a game on the Monday, not sure it's ideal for those of faith though, 3pm on Good Friday is a very important occasion within the Catholic Church, people may be forced to chose, 1pm kick off would have been better from that respect.

Why, what happens at 3pm on Good Friday religious wise?

We need to market this well if its going to work, many people won't be expecting that and not everyone reads the internet.

It used to be quite common for us to play on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday.  Similarly Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Although we have not played on Christmas Day in my lifetime (last game was 1961), I remember Good Friday games in the 70's

Well, this certainly means that, rather like an embittered Stalybridge Celtic supporter, my wife will be forced to boycott this particular fixture.

Mind you, at least I won't have to watch Quo Vadis or Ben Hur on Channel Four all afternoon!

Flynny, can I borrow one of your spare hairshirts...?

By my reckoning, this was the last time that Alty played at Moss Lane on Good Friday:

31st March 1972

Northern Premier League

Altrincham...4
(Burton (2); Broadhead; Heathcote***)
Scarborough...0

Attendance: 1,090.

*** This may well have comprised Graham Heathcote's first goal for the Robins.

This was followed by a 2-3 defeat against the green slime at The Drill Field on Easter Saturday and then a 3-0 victory at Macclesfield Town on Easter Monday.

Calling Mike Garnett for confirmation.....!

Ben Hur was on at Chgristmas, my money is on "The Robe!"

Up here in Scotland they have an extra bank hol at New Year, but don't seem to recognise Good Friday - the heathens!

I think you're right, Cult - I also think it very unlikely that I will be attending on March 29th for religious reasons.
