Title: For those vintage Alty fans who remember Netstretcher magazine
Post by: TheCultOfIanTunnacliffe on September 17, 2012, 03:30:07 PM

Back in those pre-Internet dark ages of the mid-1970s, there was an informative monthly magazine called Netstretcher which was devoted to covering Non League football, initially in the North West of England but eventually on a national scale with the inception of the Alliance Premier League in 1979.

Current Robins Review contributor and Alty supporter, Paul Brady, was heavily involved in its production.

Anyhow, there's some sad news in that its founder, editor and Marine stalwart, Jim Voiels, died recently:

Sad news, it was a pioneering and excellent publication.

I loved the "Player to Watch" section because you could guarantee you would never hear of them again - except once it was a player caled David (?) O'Neill at Horwich RMI, who later turned up at Macc and scored the winner in the 1-0 at Moss Lane at the end of the 78-9 season (after we had won 5-1 at the Moss Rose)

It used to be the only way of keeping in touch with what was going on in the Non League world, other than Saturday' MEN Pink. I still have a box of old copies in my loft I think?
