Your All Time Alty XI
« on: March 26, 2008, 02:12:48 PM »

Ok, rule one is that Jackie Swindells is exempt from this. He'd clearly be in any Alty team ever and we won't reduce the great man to even being discussed about inclusion in these.

Rule two is that it's the best side, (Ricky Harris is my favourite all time Alty player and would be in a favourite XIbut that's another thread)

Rule three: You have to have seen the players play (even if only on video)

Right

GK Wealands (pips Coburn on account of playing in the 2 best Alty sides I have seen)
RB Gardner
LB Davidson
CB Ellender
CB Cuddy
RW Howard
CM Heathcote
CM Daws
LW Showler
CF McKenna
CF Little.

I know Johnny Davison was fantastic - and would be in MY al time team - but I wouldn't play him TWICE!  :o

Mister Guru,

I'm sure that I've asked you this question on a similar previous thread....but who would be the right full back in your team?

Davison and Densmore were both left full backs!

Oh, and as regards your selection of Heathcote, do you mean Graham or Alan?

Mr. Cult,

I thought I could risk Davison at right back because there was no bloody way I was picking Stan Allan - I have a soft spot for Phil Gardner but don't think he quite makes it into the first XI - Constantine was a good right back who we inexplicably played at left back more often than not - I'd probably go for him.

And Alan Heathcote would be a strong candidate for worst XI! (but I do remember him scoring twice against us for Witton in the NWFL semi final at Central Park in 1976 or 7.

I'm a bit concerned my entire team is from the 77-83 era - but at least they will have all played together a few times (and doesn't ...Johnson, Rogers, Howard just flow off the tongue!)

What about Jimmy Brown at Right Back? He'd be my choice.

Here's mine
I've got no choice but to play two left backs - and it's for a pre-season friendly so i'll have as many subs as I like - so there!

GK Stepney
RB Davison
CH Ellender
CH Rowlands
LB Adams (D)
LW Showler
CM King (J)
CM Daws
RW Howard
CF Rogers
CF McKenna

Subs
Coburn
Harris
Barrow
Owens (J)
Johnson
Little
Anderson
Freeman

..and Kelly
and Ellison

John Connaughton

Stan Allen
John Davison

Mal Bailey
John Owes

Ian Morris
Graham Barrow
Graham heathcote
Paul Showler

John Rogers
Ken Mckenna

subs: Coburn, Ellender, Ronnie Ellis, Jeff Johnson, Phil Gardner (I have picked subs based on utillity...obviously Barry Howard is a great but i wouldn't have a sub left winger)

I feel desperatly for those who never saw some of these players play and have best ever XIs containing players who are simply not in the 70s and 80s sides league.

When it came down to it I found it amazing that I had 9 from the 70s/80s team and just two from the 90s team.
