It reminds me of that story about Northwich in the 1980s when they had an injury crisis and so the manager went into the social club before the match and asked if anyone fancied again. A couple of Sunday league players happened to be there and signed forms and, because they knew the players, knew the club and it meant so much to them they actually did ok.
I think that Parky's right about the importance of buying into a club and feeling part of it.
Incidentally, I hadn't realised and had never heard of Wilmslow Video Productions but there's also a video of the whole match for Altrincham against Macc in the 1988 cup match (was that the "I don't know if there'll be a penalty in the replay" one?).
