Every season throws up one of two outlier attendances either way - whether its the 3400 plus against Stockport on Boxing day or 600 against Blyth on a Tuesday night in January when the Manchester Derby is going on 5 miles down the road and is live on telly.

Disappointing though the attendance was, it is indicative of anything other than a set of factors which cumulatively dragged the attendance right down.

The attendance at Guiseley yesterday - 1243 - is a much more reliable indicator, and, with maybe 100 Guiseley fans attending at most, it was a great crowd.

When we were in Conference North 2011 to 2014, our average attendance was generally 850 to 900.  Our first season in Conference North 2004/05 saw an average of 665, and our 4 years in the Unibond saw average attendances drop to barely 600.

Last season we averaged 1244, with the Stockport game, and 1137 without.  This season sees out average home gate thus far this season at 1028.  If we stay in or around the play offs for the rest of the season, it seems likely that average will increase - our lower average this season is almost certainly due to a lacklustre first couple of months.

So, the clear evidence here is that home attendances have significantly increased in the short, medium and longer term - 25% up on last time we were in Conference North, and double what they were 15 to 20 years ago.  Our core support has increased markedly, despite or perhaps because of our dreadful successive relegations, followed by our resurgence under Phil P and co.  What we are seeing at Alty is unprecedented since the 1970s - we have caught the imagination of the town again, the good times are coming back, and we can look realistically at a future which could sustain league football if attendances keep pushing up as they have been. We just have to keep on getting it right on the pitch, and professionalise more off the pitch

I think the Saturday crowds are very healthy. The club has done an impressive job over the past couple of seasons in cashing in on the growing popularity of non-league football, with a number of successful match day initiatives and awareness drives. And I thought Saturday’s turnout was excellent.
It’s more the Saturday to Tuesday home fan conversion that I don’t think has kept pace. The past 7 days being a prime example.

And if you honestly believe Saturday is a “more reliable indicator” of the current core support level than last Tuesday was, then fair enough, but I think we’ll have to accept we each have very different understandings of the words ‘core support’.

Fair point Matt re the definition of 'core' - I am being deliberately over optimistic I guess.

However, a lot of people who consider themselves to be 'core' supporters struggle to get to mid-week matches - myself for example from Leeds - we have a high proportion of exiles who travel from all over the place for the Saturday matches, but for whom midweek matches are difficult.  The core support is probably about half way between the 600 home fans against Blyth and the 1140 against Guiseley - so maybe 870.  It still represents a big jump, and the fact is we are regularly getting over 1000, so the core is growing - except on Tuesdays in January perhaps!

Perhaps we need to start thinking about initiatives that get people to the night matches - focused more on the local community - how about reducing prices as a one off experiment.  I think the prices are pretty good - but the £11 concession price is a bit steep and may be putting off pensioners, students, unemployed (I guess that is what concessions covers).

Anything at all from this game would be great, assuming Brendan doesn't get it called off.

I really am concerned that we are - as per previous comments - stretching a thin squad too far-  and, if we are going to sustain a promotion/play offs push-  we really need to focus on strengthening the squad pretty urgently - for me we need a central defender, a central midfielder/playmaker and a centre forward to work with Jordan - who is playing superbly but not getting the goals because he is not getting the service he needs, and who is being man marked every game.

Back to tomorrow- can't go myself - hoping for a narrow win, but suspect a draw best realistic prospect.

To follow on from Bill's point, we spent most of the 1994/95 season in the top three of the Conference, with a real chance of promotion.  At the end of that season Maunders pulled out on the club, and we were hours away from folding.  That season, the 20 year old dream of league football died, and simply surviving became the priority.

At that time, arguably league football was not realistic on crowds of 800 to 900 or less even in a successful season.

I believe we are in a position to start dreaming again - as a medium term goal, and the support base justifies this.  If all people want is a few beers on a Saturday afternoon, they can go anywhere - they are not just coming to Moss Lane for the beer, it is the exciting football and the overall experience that is drawing more and more people in, and I for one am loving it.  Our time is coming, any day, don't worry about us now - special prize to the first person who correctly guesses which band and song I am not quite quoting   ;D

Absolutely incredible transformation - 18th to 6th in about 3 weeks.

Well done to the players and coaching staff - some of the football we are playing is as good as anything I have seen from an Alty team in a long, long time - and these players have heart and fight in them as well.

As for predictions - I would rather take one game at a time - Spennymoor away on a January Tuesday night is going to be a tough, tough game.

Rush was my first proper gig at the Manchester Apollo in - I think - 1980 - and they were incredible - so loud it scared me out of my wits! Saw them again in 1981 at - of all places - Deeside Ice rink near Chester - saw Motorhead there that year as well - I think it held 6000 standing and 1000 seated at the time so was a big stadium at the time, before the days of stadium rock.  Neil Peart was the best drummer I ever saw - and is still widely held by drummers as the best.

Terribly sad - off to the great gig in the sky.

Any younger posters who may feel this all kind of excludes them - check Rush out - you may or may not love them - but you will surely agree that that boy could drum!

Looks like a tricky one on paper.  They are unbeaten for five games on the road including wins at York, Farsley and Gateshead.  However, Curzon had a reasonable run of results before we played them and had recent wins against York and Chester to their credit.  Leamington were four unbeaten at home.  We beat both of them a lot easier then the narrow scorelines suggest.

Alty 2 - 0 Guiseley

(Moult, Peers)

Att. 1,254

Ahem from me too-  I was 1 out on the attendance!

Think I have been to every match we have ever played at Guiseley and its spooky how we always manage to find a way not to win there, despite some dominant displays in recent years.  Wonder how many equalisers Guiseley have scored in injury time over the years against us.

Great stuff Alty catering - you never know it might persuade my fiercely vegan 17 year old daughter to come to her first match since she was about 7!

Seriously, this is exactly how the club needs to be thinking - so good to see

Couldn't get to this one as midweek matches difficult.

Bloody hell that is an absolute belter from Hancock - must have been over 30 yards out

Guiseley have had a great run lately, and are proving very difficult to beat.

On the other hand this one is a genuine 6 pointer for us - win this and we leap up the table with most immediate rivals playing in the trophy.

I think it will be tough going but I fancy us we will win a very hard battle 2 1 - Hulme needs to get a goal so I hope/think he will score, then, confidence restored, score again - attendance 1243 - about 120 from Guiseley who take more away than they used to

Big match for us needs a big match atmosphere - one to tell your casual supporter friends and family to turn up for and make some noise!!

Come on Alty!

Brilliant idea-  thank you for this.

Have been trawling through the Guiseley Forum, given that they are our opponents this weekend, and that they are 3 miles from where I live, so long with Farsley - effectively my home town club, and I came across a heated exchange between Chester fans - apparently noted for regularly invading forums (so it isn't just home ends then!) - and Guiseley fans about perceived big time Charlie antics of Chester club and fans, and aggressive play and inappropriate chants of Guiseley fans.

First observation - Guiseley fans were apparently making sheep noises to Chester fans and telling them to get back to their sheep in Wales - this from a club that is virtually in the Yorkshire Dales!

Second observation - there were some pretty spot on comments about certain clubs that think they are bigger than they are and treat clubs like Guiseley like they are too good for them - then the following nugget -

'wish there were more clubs like Alty - now that's a proper club.'.

Made me reet proud - not least because a lot of supporters' rate us as a club.

Might be worth remembering this when some of us are doing sheep chants and singing songs about dirty people from Yorkshire this Saturday!

Our away following is outstanding - both in numbers and in noise.  We take a lot more away now with average crowds of just over a thousand, than we ever did in the 'glory years' of late 70s and early 80s.  It augurs well for the future-  our core support is as high as it has been since the 80s, and we regularly take 200 plus away.  These are signs of a club that, with a bit of success, is ready to take off - mark my words

Colin Little would be first name of the team sheet for team of the century, but not sure he had a major influence in the decade just gone.

Largely agree with comments and particularly pleased so many people recognising just what a special player Hulme is.

I would also try and find room for Walshaw in the team - to me he was out key player in the 2013/14 promotion season - heart of a lion, fantastic work rate, managed to form a great partnership with Reevesy even though they appeared to hate each other!  We wouldn't have gone up without Walshaw in the team, and who knows what might have happened if he had stayed on.

Nicky Clee is to me, Watmore aside, the most naturally gifted player we have had at Moss Lane in years, but I would play him left midfield rather than left back - JJ I would have a bench for a 30 minute run out when Clee runs out of steam.

Final mention - Bill if we are going to have Wilkinson in on a technicality, then we must also have Kyle Perry for his kung foo challenge on the Guiseley keeper that led to the goal!

Agree with everything you say Mrs Warbouys - and I alluded to this in another post.

it was a bit embarrassing as an Alty regular to see the scenes outside the Golf road yesterday - makes us look like a little club that cannot cope with moderate attendances never mind a big crowd.

Two turnstiles open at The Golf Road is not sufficient for most games, and this needs to be addressed on New Years Day, when we can expect another above average attendance.  The stewards didn't start directing people to the other turnstile until just before kick-off, and it really isn't a solution to direct people to the away turnstiles - this is clearly potentially risky against a club like Southport where there is a bit of a history of needle and the odd fight breaking out - and it makes a mockery of segregation, which is a necessary precaution at most matches.

I don't think the turnstile operators had been properly briefed about the online ticket scheme, and they should have been.  The scheme is a great idea, and it was a moderate success yesterday as I understand it, but it would be much more successful if the club advertised it properly, and encouraged supporters more to use it.

Lessons to be learned - lets hope we learn them
