Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Mike Garnett RIP
« on: December 28, 2019, 10:51:04 PM »
Very shocked at Mike's passing - I had no idea he was so ill - he has been a permanent fixture at pretty much every Alty match I have been to in 40 odd years.  I didn't know him well but have been honoured to be part of the little group Mike was the heart and soul of at a few matches and his views were always considered, pertinent and very forthright. He knew his football, and he knew and loved Alty FC as much as any supporter we have ever had.

I saw at close quarters how deeply the terrible seasons of successive relegations impacted his beloved Robins - Thank God he got to see 2 full seasons and a bit more of Phil Parkinson's brand of football bringing the club back from the brink - Mike didn't hand out praise lightly but I know he rated Phil highly and loved the way the team plays under him.

Rest in Peace Mike as you join the Great Statistician in the sky.

Brilliant performance today - best league performance this season in my view.

Glad people are recognising just how exceptionally Hulme played today - he is just different class, and I have been saying for some time he could play at league 1 level or above and be successful. He has curbed his temper but not his competitive edge and he holds the ball up and distributes as well as any striker we have ever had.

Simon Richman had a great game when he came on for willo - his injury is a real worry he has been our playmaker of late - and JJ's goals were excellent and will do his confidence the world of good.

Its fair enough to dismiss Southport as one dimensional, limited, not at the races etc - but don't under-estimate how good we were - we made them look poor because we played sublime, positive, aggressive football - the 10 minute spell in the first half started by Hancock's screamer was just a joy to watch - how we didn't score I don't know.

The attendance - 1519 - 175 in away end - was excellent as well. if we can get crowds that size when we are 17th in Conf North, it bodes well for when we hit a successful streak - the potential support is as high as it has been since the 1960s.

Only slight concern - to have 250 plus fans still queuing to get in the Golf Road at 3pm because we only had 2 gates turnstiles is pretty poor planning - we clearly need to work harder to get more volunteers to come forward.  This sort of thing stops floating supporters from coming back  -and we don't have the luxury of letting that happen

I'm staying optimistic - we are good enough to beat anyone in this league and I believe that, once Phil has strengthened the squad in the new year, we will start chalking up regular wins, the players collective and individual confidence will improve, and we will get into the play offs comfortably

didn't get to Ashton due to not having use of car and lack of trains from Leeds but sounds like we won ugly and were pretty profligate.  But its still a vital 3 points and its crucial we build on this tomorrow and in the next few games.

This side at its best has already proven it has the beating of Southport - so I am going to be optimistic and go for -

Alty 3 Southport 1 - Hulme, Hancock, Jones - att - 1235

Then we kick on and get into the top half of the table early in the new year and stay there

good initiative-  I hope it bumps up the attendance so there is a bit of an atmosphere.

Cannot make it over from Dirty Leeds tomorrow evening myself - midweek games are always a struggle to get to.

Great draw should we get past Farsley in the replay - not a forgone conclusion at all.

one of the many things that get me about Macc is that they are in a false position as a league team - they do not have the support base or the finances to sustain league football, and now chickens are coming home to roost. Not paying taxes, their manager and their players is a disgrace and a club like that does not deserve league football  - they are the authors of their own downfall because they spent money they have not got to get back into the football league.

In comparision, we are on a financially sound footing, and if we do get in a position to go for promotion to the Football League, which I believe we will, we have a growing fanbase and bags of potential to grow more and I think we would be fine.  As I have been saying for years - we are a bigger club than Macc and always have been.

Another thing i really hate about Macc is their mini 'firm' which comprises of about 3 40 something year old fat saddos who should know better, and about 20 15 to 17 year olds who can't hold their drink. I wonder how they are getting on steaming into the home fans bars at the likes of Grimsby, Swindon, Carlisle, Crewe, Bradford City and Plymouth.  I sm sure they are tearing it up every where they go  ;D ::)

Remember Brian Smikle scored an absolute belter against Gloucester in a night match in 13/14 season.  He came with an immaculate pedigree - 200 plus appearances in the league for Kiddy and Cheltenham - but he never quite got going at Alty and disappeared before the season was half way through. He is now playing Evesham United in the Southern League Div 1 South.

Ryan Crowther was pretty talented as well, but spent most of his time with us backing off from tackles and otherwise looking like he'd rather be anywhere else than playing footie for us.  I remember one match when he got the bollocking of his life from Lee Sinnott while he was still on the pitch as he didn't want to run down the left wing because he thought it looked icy! to be fair he has a point. Seem to remember he scored a worldy for us as well, but cannot remember who against, or if my memory is distorting the Barnsley near miss.

Agreed.  On paper the 2015 vintage is a good bunch of players but key changes to personnel from previous season meant they never did gel as a team - and the rest really is history.

4 years on, whilst it has been a brutal journey, we are on the up again, with the best manager IMHO since 80s Kingy, and a team of talented lads who will all take a bullet for each other and the club.  The very fact that they were so distraught tells me they have the passion, talent and the grit to storm the league this season - with perhaps a nice diversion of a really good Trophy run as well.

Bill, great message from the club and, as per my message last night, the fans really were out of this world on Saturday

On train from Waterloo to Fratton, my brother and me were talking to two other Alty fans and a Pompey fan and discussing what would be worst possible draw for the winner - I suggested away Carlisle, but my brother opined that Fleetwood away would be the worst possible draw, on the basis of rubbish crowd - probably more Alty there than fishy fans, no telly as deeply unappealing tie, and we would probably lose anyway.  He is a bit too clever for his own good is my bruv!  ;D

Funny how things work out, though i'd have taken it over soul-crushing defeat in the dying seconds at Fratton Park.  Still, all FA Cup runs end in disappointment unless you win, and it really was a great cup run

Pretty much everything about the set up at Portsmouth impressed me - the friendliness and generosity of spirit of the fans, the fact that everything was good value, the noise and atmosphere even when less than half full, the old school feel of the ground, set amongst rows of terraced houses where the back yards almost touched the stands, the boozers, the obvious deep love of the club and their city  - hand clapping to Portsmouth Harbour was a high point for me - the deep hatred of Southampton, and the general sense of the love of the game.

Probably the most positive away ground experience at a league club I have ever had - apart from the result.

Worst was for me indisputably Burnley 1982 - from being gobbed on, spat at and threatened in police escort all the way from the away fans coach park - felt like about 10 miles away - to the Nazi salutes and Doc Martin boots of their hundreds of skinhead followers packed up against the segregated fence, the United 'Red Army' lads along for the fight in our end who didn't give a damn about the game, to the result of course-  we lost 6 1 in a match that felt like the beginning of the end of an era - which is was of course.

37 years on, I really do believe we are at the beginning of a new era of major success, that's how good both the players and fans were.

Altrincham FC First Team / Fans yesterday
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:34:49 PM »
It isn't just the players that were outstanding yesterday. I ended up watching the match from the middle of their main stand and it was a  pleasure to watch and listen to our fans make so much noise throughout the 90 minutes and more, and to take on the Fratton End in the noisiness stakes and give them a good run for their money - because you did - for the most part you were just as loud or louder than the Pompey fans - who to be fair never shut up either- I still have that drum and bell racket bouncing around my skull  (think its a south coast variant of Drum and Bass!).

I don't think I have ever seen us go as bonkers as we did when Hancock slotted his penalty home btw.  It looked like joyous bedlam from where I was sat, must have been awesome to be part of that. This generation of Alty fans are quality - noisier, more passionate, more loyal home and away, have funnier repertoire of songs and far better in my view than what we generally got in 'the glory years'.  Pete Carroll and Kenny RIP would be very proud of you all.

Talk about 12th man - you were the entire subs bench yesterday and you definitely inspired the players. Pompey fans commented that you were quality, noisy, vociferous, credit to the club - all these are comments addressed to me by Portsmouth fans who I spoke to after the match.

Keep it going comrades - we are on our way back!

Altrincham FC First Team / Jordan Hulme
« on: December 01, 2019, 09:16:13 PM »
Given the level of the opposition especially, I thought Jordan put in one of the best centre forward displays I have ever seen in 45 years of watching the Robins.  He was absolutely superb and gave their back 4 a torrid time throughout the whole match.  He should have had a penalty in the first half, and the fact that the left back risked a penalty to stop him in his tracks shows how much fear and respect they had for him, he went agonisingly close when he hit the post, and Kenny Overcoat himself said he was happy he was brought down for the 2nd half penalty because he was about to 'pull the trigger' and we have seen Jordan score plenty of goals in similar positions.

What made it the complete forward's performance for me though was his work rate - one time he lost possession and tracked back a good sixty yards to help us win the ball back - his skill and touch on the ball, his unselfish play - several cute little lay offs to other players and putting in the tackles l - and the fact that he got right under their defence's skin, annoyed the hell out of them, and lulled them into mistake after mistake.

Truly outstanding young man!  You7 just proved you could walk into any league one side and do a great job of work for them - that is how good you are Jordan.  You will have Conference North's defences on toast for the rest of the season if you keep playing like that. Fill your boots lad ;D

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: TT & Willo
« on: December 01, 2019, 08:55:54 PM »
Agree TT and Willo both brilliant yesterday - TT pulled of saves that would have graced the premiership and Sean played his best game for Alty yesterday - classic midfield playmaker who ran the game for periods yesterday.  But to be fair every single one of them brought their best game and were individually and collectively outstanding - no exceptions and little mistakes in the heat and intensity of an incredibly exciting match don't matter to me and are not what the game should be remembered for.

The number of forced and unforced errors from a side 3 leagues above us was horrendous and in comparison we looked like the disciplined, organised professionals. Lot in admiration for the players and I hope they aren't too despondent today, because every one of them was immense yesterday . When I think of some of the chancers and journeymen who have pulled on the Alty shirt in recent years just to draw a wage and compare them to the passion, steel, bite, fight and skill on display yesterday - our lads have nothing whatsoever to reproach themselves for because they all bled for the club yesterday just like they did at Chorley - and that makes this one of the all time best Alty teams in my estimation
