From the main site...

NW NEWS

From NL Daily, we learn that "The Evo-Stik Northern Premier League have extended their season by a week, in a bid to help clubs cope with the continuing bad weather. A statement from the League reads... 'The League Board are mindful of the many factors both for and against extending the season by one week. It is however with a responsibility to the welfare of players, extensive midweek travelling and spectators getting to games that reluctantly the decision has been made to extend the season to include a full round of fixtures on Saturday 4th May...
The Promotion Play-Off dates as a result of this announcement will also be revised which will be published later".

The other leagues (including BSN) will surely have to follow suit.

You'd like to hope so - BSBPremier will cling on like death to the idea of having their play-off final at a partly-opened Wembley, which can't be later than May 5th because of the European Cup Final (or whatever they call it these days), but that's no reason not to extend the regional leagues by a week and put their play-offs back. Don't hold your breath, though ...

If clubs can carry huge swathes of players yet not get the basics right why is that the leagues fault?, alarm bells should have been ringing in early September at Harrogate and Halifax when they first started having games called off, the only fault the league have made is not allowing Harrogate to use starbeck for league games and Halifax to use Farsley, other than that its not their doing, why should clubs just be able to stroll over the finish line when they want? We got no extension in1991, and it possibly cost us a place in the football league. Leek played 5 games in 7 days and managed to stave off relegation from the conference. Everyone knows the start date and the finish date, they should just get on with it. And also if Guiseley had got their finger out rather than drag it put, we could be hosting Halifax tonight...

Absolutely spot on - it is what it is.

If it only snowed in NW Cumbria for example and nowhere else, then there may be a valid argument that (say) Workington should get special treatment. However there is also the argument that the weather is nothing new (despite the media constantly trying to 'big-up' the snow) and a club knowing this should maintain their pitch accordingly or take extra steps to make sure games get played (spend money on drainage or frost covers for example - whatever cash is left over can be spent on strikers).

On a similar note, it has always made me wonder if certain cricket counties are at a geographical disadvantage when winnable games are rained off and are hence drawn. Particularly in a league where not every team is played both home and away.

Worcestershire seem to have a problem:

in addition what if the last match of the season is halifax vs harrogate, both only need to draw, we have finished all our games.

They would make sure all teams have fixtures on the last day. Still don't agree with extending the season.

As far as I am concerned the league are to blame for starting the season 2 weeks late.

If we'd started on the 1st Saturday in August, rather than the 3rd then clubs would have managed to play 4 games (2 Tuesdays and 2 Saturdays) on nice warm summers days and we wouldn't be having this discussion now.

A point made made by someone (Jimmy I think) was that we should have more Tuesday games early on in the season as well, get a lot more games in before Christmas and leave much more space near the end.

It's perhaps the last 4 years we've had problems. The snow winter 2009 & 2010 and then the rain and this month the snow/ cold again. In contrast to last March when we were enjoying 20 degrees. It's hard to call. This September/ October we will deluged with monsoons now :)

Yes but that would mean that players with kids would not get to go away in the school Summer hols at all (if pre-season is taken into account). There are plenty of Saturdays and Tuesdays between mid August and the end of April within which to play 42 games of football + cup games ! No need to start early, no need to finish late and no need for a daft Winter break either (as this last week has just proved)
