A long time ago Alty played Crewe in the first round of the FA Cup. The game was rescheduled because Neil Lennon was playing for N.Ireland on the original date, so it got played on a Tuesday night.
Crewe eventually won 1-0 to a Dele Adebole second half goal.
I recall the Crewe midfield being run by a blonde haired player with a very trendy hairstyle. I asked the guy next to me if I could look at his programme to check the player's name. My memory tells me it said No.8 Robbie Savage.
A few years ago the game was getting discussed on here and I mentioned this. I was told that wasn't Robbie Savage, it was another player who's name now I can't remember.
So last night I had the golden opportunity to ask the man himself when I found myself sitting in front of him in the Family Stand. "Robbie, did you play here for Crewe in the FA CUP?" "No, that wouldn't have been me he said".
So there we are. But a) who was it? b) why did I think it was Robbie Savage? Does anyone have the programme and/or the team sheet from that night to help me prove I'm half right, and he was at least listed in the programme if not actually on the pitch?

Crewe won 2-0 , Neil Lennon ran the game for them .
-
With more thought , there was another impressive midfielder for them , like Hale Alty i can't remember his name but i think , like Lennon, he also later played for Liverpool .

Danny Murphy surely?
-
After some research i believe the player to be Gareth Whalley , despite him never being at Liverpool or Danny Murphy also part of Crewe's squad that night .

My first ever game al ML was Alty vs Crewe in the FAC 1st round in 1979. I was still a kid at school. We won 3-0 and the crowd was 3001 I think. To this day I credit myself with being "the one" :)

I don't think Robbie Savage was on the pitch in 1979!
-
the player i am thinking of definitely wasn't gareth whalley having googled photos. i still think it was robbie savage. i'd love someone to dig up the team sheet, or if they can remind me of the date i'll try and find the report in john laidlar's archive. this same player was at the alty game the week before watching with dario gradi. looks like it was 95/96 season.

Actually, I think Swindellsworth was 5000 and I was 5001. 😉 😂😂😎

As an aside would Colin Little have been a Crewe player at that time?
-
his wiki page says he joined 1996 so probably not.

Colin Little was born in 1972 and joined Crewe in the late 90s (1996, I think)
Beat me to it, Hale!

Whilst on the subject , might as well mention our first cup encounter with Crewe in 1968 . Willie Mailey was incredible for them , unbeatable , as we lost to a breakaway goal by Wayne Emmerson late on in front of a stunned crowd of 6,500 . Willie went on to give sterling service to us with many displays like the one that day , our outstanding player in a number of pretty mediocre Alty sides . Proper club legend and amongst our best ever keepers.

Yes. I always thought that if he'd been quite a bit taller his career would have been very different.

For the record I did mean the 95 cup game not 1979!!

Could have taught Byrne a thing or two about commanding his box. What he lacked in height he more than made up for in agility

After giving fantastic service Willie was let go by Roy Rees when he arrived before the 72-73 season and replaced him with Peter Frankish , omg , Roy turned our fortunes around but this was his biggest ever clanger , from a club legend to leg-end .

I agree. Perhaps the worst keeper we've ever had imho. At least since I started watching (late 1965).
A couple of times over the years on here we've had threads on the worst players we've had (as well as threads picking the best obs).
I've always been surprised that very few agreed with me that Frankish (Rees' mate from Skem) was a total disaster for us. His 'efforts' were more obvious when compared to Mailey.

What was the name of that reserve keeper we had in the 94/95 season? Nearest I ever came to seeing him play was when he pulled his hamstring in the warm up and had to be substituted even before the game started. (There does seem to be a running theme in this thread about me not being able to remember things).

Could the player be Mark Gardiner

looking up photos i would say he's not the player i remember seeing. i need to find a programme really.

I've just bought the programme from this match on Ebay and lo and behold a Rob Savage is listed at no.9 for Crewe in the programme. Not conclusive proof that he was on the pitch (and I recall him being in the no.8 shirt) but it's good enough for me. Wouldn't mind turning up a match report though.
