My grandad came round last week and brought this programme from Altrincham v Everton in the FA Cup third round replay at Old Trafford. Just thought I'd post some scans for anyone whose interested...

What a great time that was!
Day after my eldest daughter was born! (Sorry, showing my age!!!!!!!!!!!)

My first Alty match, I was hooked, ps Bob Latchford you bastard :'(

A fantastic experience as a 13 year old kid. no 13 yearold would be allowed to go on their own to those sort of games in todays world but it was all ok in the seventies. with hindsight there is no wonder i wouldnt let my kids go and in those days anyone in the wrong colours was fair game . no of this casual code of honour wrong place wrong time sorry kid
There was a free coach if you collected vouchers for the two or three home games before everton away which we all made sure we got (you were prob on it sw but redhill was far too old)
so off to everton free of charge liverpool are playing stoke at home the same time same day .
which is the first problem red and white scarfs mean either liverpool stoke or alty so we became random targets to everton fans from getting off the coach.
Magnificent game we were outstanding and well worthy of the draw we felt robbed by their equaliser and came out of the grounf feeling dissapointed that we only got a draw . we went to where the coach dropped us and it wasnt there. There are now 52 naive under 16 s wandering around looking for a coach, a copper tells us it is over there so a walk down past stanley park half way down the road we come under a hail of bottles luckily no one gets hit and the coach is found we get on the coach stop at traffic lights and the coach gets hit by a barrage of bricks once again luckily no windows go through most of us are lying on the floor by now.
replay night and we go to old trafford truely bellieving we will win ( i mean after all everton were only top of the league(premiership). alty have the stretford end and we swagger and sing mightly with the backing off half of manchester then all odf a sudden mayhem happens everton have tried to take the stretford end it didnt last long and the police and the big boys see them off . then on the pitch two glaring misses by lennie dickinson and then a mistake by cote (yeh slag him off he was planning on the ferrari then) and we ccome away losers but still proud. walk down warwick road to get the train home and the road is split into two length wise one side everton the other side alty . in between a line of horses and police dogs it goes off i get pushed forward and bitten by a police dog (ouch). no wonder i remember that night
walsall also beat united that night in a major shock if i remember correctly and on the saturday wimbledon drew with leeds and anothe rnonleague team drew with burnley? possibly leatherhead got a result somewhere as well . over to you stattos

Wimbledon won away 1-0 at Burnley on the Saturday and Leatherhead led Leicester 2-0 before losing 3-2

i wasnt far out then. not bad off the cuff . those early days of success were almost as unlikely as us doing it now .i just wish the youger lads coming through could get a taste for it but also admire your sort of in betweenies ecky hughesy etc who missed out on the glory years (am i correct ) got 91 and spurs 95 ok but not quite the same as going to birmingham knowing your going to win.
nuff respeck to the young golf road massive and hoping it happens again soon without the bottles and bricks

I went with my dad, my mate from down the street and my Scouse Uncle from Huyton.....a Liverpool fan. We parked up somewhere the other side of Stanley Park and walked through, wearing red and white and a scarf around the wrist as was the fashion in the day. We attracted much attention but thanks to my no nonsense gruff uncle nothing came of it.
After we scored a couple of brown cider bottles flew out of the Glawdys Street end in the direction of Peter Eales in goal. Their mood didn't improve when John Connolly went of with a broken leg.
Coming out the Liverpool fans were arriving to take the pi55 out of Everton and started singing "Altrincham" Kenny was near us and joined in. Some Evertonian asked Kenny who the F we are and he said we come from just down the road from Old Trafford! It got a bit tasty but thanksto the Liverpool fans (and my Uncle's local knowledge of the area, we got out and away and back to the car, still being carefully minded by the three nine year olds who had asked to watch it for 50p.
The replay was a bit of an anti-climax to me, stood on what was then the United Rd Paddock. Overall though what an occasion, the real beginning of the great times I think.
Same night as said, Wimbledon had already won at Burnley and somehow stole our thunder.....first time of several.....and I'm sure Stafford got some kind of result against Middlesbrough if my memory isn't totally dead?

Leeds was the next round......Dicky Guy saved Peter Lorimer's penalty at Elland Road & Johnny Giles scored the only goal in the replay....played at Selhurst Park.

P.S. - it does the heart good to see the immortal words 'DIVISION TWO MANCHESTER UNITED' on the back page of the prog. I had to go and check my own copy to make sure I hadn't been imagining things! I remember watching the first game from the Gwladys Street - God knows how my mate Andrew and I found our way in there! - and emerging unscathed.

Just noticed the Half Time scoreboard and see Manchester United were at Walsall that night in a 3rd round replay.
I remember it well, wagged off school for the half day at lunchtime to catch the supporters train to Bescot halt, a railway siding next to the M6 and in the middle of nowhere.
Received a mounted police escort to and from the old Fellows Park ground (what a dump) from those every so lovely and user friendly West Midlands Police officers.
United lost 2-3.
A classic case of "I was there, but wished I wasn't"

My father and i were in the end where the ref gave the pen,i still maintain we were robbed it was a good tackle and he should not have given the pen.

I was quite a bit away from it - but it was very debatable.
Not only that, it was the third or fourth blatent diving attempt for a penalty from him after getting policed well whilst trying to get through the Alty defence to score the conventional way (i.e. using football skills rather than imitating a salmon).

remember taking the lead at goodison everton were first division leaders at the time john hughes's goal featured on the cover of alty programmes for a few seasons after that
