Weren't Ashton United the opponents in our most recent league cup game of any sort when ExGk made a playing comeback at Hurst Cross, before the Bob Lord Trophy (the competition, not the silverware) was scrapped?

I think it was called the Setanta Shield when we lost 6-2 at Ashton. The following season we lost at home to Wrexham after extra time before they finally binned the competition.

It's a very fast Austin Rover mate.

The Ashton fixture took place when it was still called the Carthium Cup if I remember correctly.

The Ashton game was in 2004-5 (4th Oct 2004 to be precise). Ian Senior was in goal - Coburn was resting an injury, Richard Acton had gone to Bangor City & Kurt Edginton couldn't get there from work in time to play. Among the Ashton scorers were Colin Alcide, Josh Mitten & Nicky Clee. Steve Aspinall scored for both sides (penalty for us, own goal against!) & we went from 2-1 up to 2-6 down in the last half-hour. Crowd (a relative term!) 177. The Setanta Shield was played from 2007-9. We lost at Nuneaton in the first season & at home to Wrexham in the second. The Conference haven't run a League Cup since then.

Love it when we all get nostalgic!  ::) :D

Despite where we are this year, isn't it GREAT to be an Alty Fan?

PS: Bit late to change now after nearly 52 years!  :o

Thanks to you and Roytonmike for reminding me. Obviously, it was a pretty forgettable competition, but that game at Ashton does stick in the mind!

Incidentally, I see from the main site that, if the scores are level, it goes immediately to penalties without extra time. A few competitions seem to be doing that nowadays, and I certainly welcome it for a stalemated league cup tie when your heart sinks at the thought of 30 more minutes.

Thankfully the League Cup is not a group competition like it used to be. When we had a Presidents Cup and a Chairmans Cup for those teams who finished 2nd and 3rd in their groups.

That was so odd, it was harder to get out of than Going for Gold!

I'm sure I went to Ossett for a game in that?  One of the Ossetts?

We definitely played at Ossett Town, who are the ones who play in the town centre, by the bus station.

This competition has certainly had some funny formats, when, even if you lost, you were placed in another competition. I don't think there's anything like that now, but wouldn't like to say for sure...

trophy cabinet is hardly overflowing, i say we aim to win the competition.

might as well make the most of our time at this level by picking up as much silverware as possible.

Agreed as long as it doesn't affect the league.
