Fanfare for the common man is part of Altrincham history..it can never be replaced.

You can put it on anytime on youtube and it reminds you of Alty if you have watched them for a few years

I realise that 20 years ago it might motivate the odd player mark, but its essentialy bad dinosaur music now

Pleased to hear that. Some things are sacred and that is definitely one of them.

Of course!

However, songs played as the players run out aren't there to be enjoyed or listened to with a critical ear as we would do with our own music collections.

Instead they are meant to stir up emotion and evoke memories of past glories, make people think of the first time they heard it and what it means for them to hear it at that moment. Whether the music is 'good' or 'bad' is neither here nor there.

if it doesn't effect the players, as it clearly didn't yesterday in any way or form, then this is irrelevant, bad music is just bad music period

I like Fanfare but would like it a whole lot more if it started before the team came out.. not twenty seconds later.

Its just a song Jacko...its not meant to affect the result.

Everything else I have ever heard by ELP has been horrendous weird keyboard nonsense.

This tune is used by football clubs as a tune to run out to and has been used by Alty since the eighties.

Its not part of the tactics.

If you saw the setup that Rafo has to use to make it happe you'd realise he does well to get it on 20 seconds after the teams come out!

I have a full set of Emerson Lake and Palmer, and saw them live three times back in the 70's. They may not be to the taste of you young whippersnappers, but they were a highly professional set of musicians who put many modern bands firmly in their place.

I had the pleasure of seeing Carl Palmer with Asia at Buxton Opera House last year. At 64 years of age, he's STILL one of the best drummers I've ever seen, and his energy would put a guy half his age to shame ! Perhaps we could try and get them to play live at Moss Lane (note for Mansfield fans - "Westlife my arse").

Running out to Chumbawumba was something different yesterday. I agree with Ecky, Fanfare still gets everyone going.

Have to query Mariah Carey's  - Hero (Don't ask how I know it was that  :)) at the end of the match. I like how it lasted for 3 or 4 seconds before common sense prevailed... Made me chuckle to myself... ;D

Wasn't it the awful cover version of Hero by the X-Factor lot which was released last year.

Keith Emerson - a trained classical musician - was a quite extraordinary keyboard player, and the main creative force behind the band. Greg Lake (bass and vocals) was also pretty decent.

Fanfare is sacred as far as I'm concerned. What about that other instrumental that used to be played at full time? Any chance we can bring that back?

Fanfare for the Common Man made its debut for Alty before the opening match of the 1978 -79 season; a 4-1 victory over Worksop with Barry Howard scoring on his debut.

I remember it well as it was amongst my favourites at the time and I was delighted to see Alty choosing such a cutting edge piece of music.  We could have chosen "Pretty Vacant" after all.  I do remember going to Stafford at that time and hearing them run out to Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie and the Banshees...

a change is as good as a rest.

why not change the thing every week.

£10.00 says you can choose the track of the week

£15.00 says you an choose the ll important track, and a couple of others at half time.

£50.00 says you chose the entire days music.

(within reason of course)

In fact I'll stump up the first £50.00 if this is organised (no idea of the legal side to be honest).  Not sure how many tracks we normally get through, maybe 6-8?

Not knocking a fundraising idea but its a non starter in my opnion.

Having seen (well, built,..) the ageing PA setup that is in the press box and seen the hassle it to actually do the PA, the last thing Rafo needs is to have to be following playliists and checking to see if songs are suitable, the right version, on eight different cds or burnt and then they won't play on our cd player.

You play middle of the road chart CD's, Fanfare for the Common man and concentrate on making sure all the announcements are done and the thing doesn't blow up on you.

I'll stump up the first £50.00

If you've got £50 burning a hole in your pocket I'd be more inclined to pay £30 for some hospitality on Saturday afternoon and spend the other £20 in the club shop.

JD, you've got it there me ol' china.

add in a message from the sponsor (vetted in advance, and read out by the PA).

that would solve the problem of battling with the kit & raise a few quid in the process.

raffle prize also somes to mimd?
