FA Cup Third Round
Tottenham Hotspur...1  Altrincham...1

Can it really be 30 years since our first visit to White Hart Lane?
Good Lord, that makes me feel almost as old as George Heslop....

So, for those members of this Forum who were fortunate enough to be there, what are your abiding memories of the occasion?

I recollect travelling down on the specially chartered train from Alty station and the somewhat unpleasant walk back to this through the North London streets after the match.

Kingy clattered Ardiles.
Ardiles clattered Kingy.
Mal Bailey went off injured.
And I recall almost banging my head on some pipes at the back of the stand when leaping out of the seat to acclaim Jeff Johnson's equaliser.

Halcyon days.

I just about remember all that too. I was 6 at the time.

Didn't the train get delayed after the game aswell.

I sort of remember getting back to Timperley station about 4am

It was never a penalty to this day, well outside the box.

I lived in Newark. My football supporting Head (Forest in 1979!) let me have some time off school to get there.
I had gone to Alty on the Friday to travel on the special train which I think was cancelled because the match was snowed off. I had tickets to travel with my new Alty based girlfriend. Coming back got the Sun at Kings Cross and the match report was alraedy on the back page. In slower news times this seemed incredible. Got the mail train home!
The night out at Maine Road was to look forward to.

We got to go because after the original postponement the tanker drivers strike meant Welly Road had no heating oil so to White Hart Lane we went.  Remember sitting high up in the stand at the end JJ scored.  Didn't John Davison hit the bar as well?  Remember getting rushed outside on the way back to the station, and a copper nicking a couple of Spurs fans headed right for us!  Also, I seem to remember the train back being freezing at first and a song breaking out of "Put 5p in the meter".  Didn't we play in solid red tops that night as well?  Good times.....

1.  Getting chased away from the ground
2.  Kingy pretending to be shocked when Ardiles refused to swop shirts at the end  :D (He said JK had been trying to rip it off for 90 minutes!

I also went on that special train from Alty Station that took about 6 hours to get back, due to giving way to freight trains.
Strange if the first game was called off beacuse of snow in London, when we got back to Alty after the replay we were met with a thick layers of snow. I remember a lot of us battling to get our cars moving at about 4am. I then I had to be up by 7am for work in Manchester City centre.
The game was great and Jeff's equaliser was a leveller. I stood behind the goal where Jeff scored.
I also went to the replay.

It was the "Winter Of Discontent" and Altrincham Grammar was also closed for the same reason, thereby allowing us to travel down for the rearranged Wednesday match.

Good old Jim Callaghan!
