For those Alty fans of a certain vintage, Kendal Town will be better known as Netherfield - one of the group of teams (Netherfield, South Liverpool, Gateshead, Macclesfield) that propped up the NPL at the end of the seventies.
I remember playing them at Moss Lane the week before we played at Droylesden in the FA Cup second round and with all our strikers injured, we needed Mickey Brooke to secure a 1-0 win.
I made two visits to Netherfield - in the first the Robins played dire football to lose 1-2 and in the second we played dire football to draw on e of the most forgettable matches in the history of football 0-0. Both games were in midweek - and attracted crowds of the order of 280.
There is a legend of George Heslops bobble hat being on the roof of the main stand at Kendal after a late Alty win in the seventies - it will remain there until the club is in dire need and whosoever wears the bobble hat is the just and righteous saviour of the club (or something).
I notice Kendal are at Witton on Tuesday - perhaps our non exiled fans and our management team will be in situ - we could have asked Rod but he'll be in Russia!
