Title: Pele "beginning end-of-life care".
Post by: Hugh on December 03, 2022, 06:21:12 PM
Unconfirmed report mentioned by the BBC that he is failing to respond to chemotherapy.

If not the greatest, certainly one of the greatest. His record of scoring over 1,000 goals is comparable to Jackie Swindell's scoring record at Altrincham, but at the very highest level and over decades. The Yoruba must be very proud of him. I hope he pulls through.

Very sad news, as someone of a certain age I seem to be saying goodbye to childhood heroes so regularly as well unfortunately as some of my own generation.

Sad news of a great player and ambassador.  So humble too, he said George Best was the best ever player & Bobby Moore second.

I guess his heritage is Mozambique Hugh, so not sure why the Yoruba (Nigeria, Benin), but thank you Hugh for the update.

Someone I know told a story of when he was a linesman in Nigeria, and one time he met Pele when he was playing in that country and tried to speak to him in Yoruba, having presumably heard that he had connections to the Yoruba. Apparently Pele had to apologise that he didn't actually know the language - I suppose he wouldn't have had much need of it growing up in Brazil. Still, you could be right. It seems Pele is also a word in Yoruba so maybe there is no connection.

Here is the bit from the linesman's book. He was also a player, playing at the time for a team called the Lagos Casuals, and as such invited with his club to watch a match between Nigeria and Brazil when Pele was playing. He writes of the occasion: "We had the honour of meeting up with him after the match. The game itself was a beautiful exhibition of controlled play by Pele and his colleagues. The result of the game was inevitable but irrelevant to the fact that it was a delight to watch and Pele afterwards was great. Incidentally Pele comes from the Yoruba area of Brazil in Belem where as a youngster playing soccer he would dodge and dive, as he still does and the children used to shout Pele, in Yoruba, meaning Sorry - "ekpele" - Sorry in that way is a typical thing Yoruba's say to each other when someone missed out something. Pele himself cannot speak Yoruba although he admitted his parents do."

So rights Chief Elwyn Williams, who is in fact Welsh (now with a b and b in Penygroes that I sometimes go to) but took a great interest in the Yoruba culture during his time in Nigeria.

There is a strong Yoruba culture in NE Brasil, due to historic slave trafficking. But Pele was born in Minas Gerais and spent most of his early years in SP.

That said, Brasil is so multi cultural that it's likely he had much interaction with Yoruba's throughout his life.

Anyway, he is in the very best hospital in Brasil, so plenty of reasons to be hopeful.

Isn't that Mickey Moore?
I remember him as a number 8 midfielder. Is my memory playing tricks again?

Just Wikipedia'd him and he did score 30 in 68 games so I could be wrong!

Good player . Definitely a striker , like the old inside forward type , Roger Hunt for instance . That's a real good goals return in a not so good team , Les Rigby era i think , nuff said !

I used to work with his brother, Gordon Moore, for many years.
Gordon was a big Bolton Wanderers fan and it was on a works night out when he learned I followed Altrincham. He asked me if I 'knew' his brother. I did not and in conversation with Brian Flynn, I was made aware of the Pele connection. To my amazement Gordon knew nothing abour the Pele connection either.
In a very sad turn of events, Gordon passed away after a short illness within 12 months of retiring at 60.

Mick Moore was certainly a forward - wore number 9 usually

Scored 4 at Worksop in our 7-1 win there but missed a penalty at Rotherham in the FA Trophy Semi-Final 1st Replay which would have taken us to Wembley

We swapped him for John Rogers with Wigan Athletic

Mickey Moore - unfortunately to be found in the rather large 'forward who came with a great reputation, never quite did it at Alty' file.

I never forgave Mickey Moore for that missed penalty in the Trophy replay against Scarborough.

Why was it played at Rotherham though? And didn't we first make our acquaintance with Barnsley fans there too? Here's hoping for another Trophy run anyway, it's been too long.

It was a second replay, so Millmoor was a neutral ground. It ended in a draw, and we lost the third replay at Belle Vue, Doncaster.

Phil,

It was a first replay, not a second.

Three FAT semi-final replays! And I thought we had it bad for the number of games we had to play in 1990-91! For all the flaws of penalty shootouts, at least they get a tie finished!

As a teenage Alty fan back then it was rather helpful that both Doncaster and Rotherham fans sided with Alty and protected our outnumbered group from the Scarborough contingent. There was a lot of trouble during that protracted encounter.

Phil,

Mea culpa Barry. Of course it wasn't home and away legs back then.

Of course for those of us of a certain age Alvechurch v Oxford City went to five replays in the FA Cup before getting a result. No penalties back then.

1st leg.   Boro 2 Alty 0
2nd leg.  Alty 2 Boro 0 ( cant remember if it was AET )
  1st replay 0-0  aet ( i think ! )
  2nd replay  1-2
We battled like troopers over the 4 games and the outcome was gutting of course , but we were'nt quite good enough against a very good Scarboro side who beat the Daggers 2-1 at Wembley . However that run to the semi was really the launching pad to the greatest period in the clubs history.
