Today's Alty trivia question*
« on: January 10, 2008, 09:29:31 PM »

*Cult is disqualified as I know he knows the answer (can pm me if you want).

WHICH CURRENT PREMIERSHIP MANAGER HAS PLAYED AGAINST ALTY IN A COMPETITIVE MATCH? (i.e. friendlies don't count)

p.s. That's Premiership as in Utd, Arsenal etc not the BSP.

Paul Jewell?

When I read the question, I immediately thought this too.

This is subject to confirmation, but I am sure I remember Paul Jewell playing for Wigan against Altrincham in the FA cup tie in the late 80s between the two sides. Having looked it up, the game was a first round game in 87/88. We lost 2-0.

I have had a look around, but have not managed to find the teams from that day to confirm this.

Perhaps the cult can confirm whether I am right or not!

Foz,

I suspect that you are on to something here.....

I've just fished out the match programme for that game, which took place on 14th November 1987....during those dark days when Tommy Docherty was the Alty manager.

Anyway, the prospective team line-up for Wigan Athletic on the back of the programme does indeed list their No. 10 as being a certain Paul Jewell.

Alas, I don't have a record of the actual teams that afternoon and, consequently, am unable to confirm whether Jewell did play against the Robins at Moss Lane.

Over to you, Mister Flynn.....

Foz,

It looks like you are correct.

I've just unearthed my copy of the Non League Club Directory 1989, which includes the statistics for the Alty v Wigan Athletic FA Cup tie in 1987.

In the Wigan Athletic line-up, Paul Jewell is indeed listed as wearing the No. 10 shirt.

Fancy Brian Flynn forgetting that?

100 lines please, Mister Flynn.
And don't get your daughter to write them out for you.....
