Altrincham FC First Team / Barwell : Match Thread
« on: April 10, 2018, 06:12:48 PM »
They're big, they're ugly, and they were in decent form after New Year's day with an unbeaten run of 9 yielding 21 points. They COULD still make the playoffs, but they had 3 straight defeats after that run, tellingly going down 2-0 at Warrington, and 4-1 at Grantham.

Those last two suggest that, with the benefit of a 6 day break, we should get the required win.

Sheerien Park is currently set to stage 13 games in the next 24 days, one of which is a cup game that could potentially yield a 14th.

Athersley Recs season has been extended by a week (they already have a game on May 3rd !) so they could potentially shift one of their scheduled 5 home games in 11 days into that week, assuming last night's postponed game goes there too.

The likelihood of that pitch standing up to the amount of usage scheduled for it is practically nil. Athersley are at home on Saturday, then Shaw Lane on Monday/Thursday/Saturday.

Some games really will have to go elsewhere.

Altrincham FC First Team / Crunch time
« on: March 28, 2018, 10:53:57 AM »
Saturday's trip to Rushall begins a period of 5 games in 10 days, 4 of them on the road. Warrington have still to visit Grantham, and I believe 94 points will be enough for us to seal the championship.

My major concern is with injuries, but we should still do this comfortably enough. Win at Rushall, and at home to Marine, and 11 points from the remaining 7 games should be enough.

We still have to go and be kicked black and blue by the Dingles, but on what we saw last night they're a spent force - hopefully they'll kick Warrington too ! Another bunch of cloggers are still to come to us, Barwell Town  (2 penalties conceded and 2 sent off in a 2-1 home defeat by Stafford last night).

Our fringe players will have a big part to play. Tom Peers has already proved his worth, Max Harrop has a crucial role if James Poole is going to be missing. I thought Chris Merrie looked half decent last night, certainly in terms of his attitude, while Theo Bailey-Jones may be able to step up effectively.

It's entirely in our own hands now, let's get behind the lads and get it won.

A repeat of tonight and we'll destroy them. I'm driving down via the National Brewery Museum at Burton, and looking forward immensely to winding up Richard Brodie again.

It's only an hour and a half down the M6. Let's get there in force and back the boys to the hilt !

Altrincham FC First Team / Andy White
« on: March 27, 2018, 11:47:38 PM »
I've been very critical of Andy, but I'm never afraid to admit when I'm wrong. He was excellent at Halesowen, and tonight I could have been tempted to name him MOM. He looks like the player I hoped we'd signed, he'll be a key player during the run-in.

Our first ever visit to "The Yeltz". They've won 3 of their last 5 and are in a personal battle with Sutton Coldfield to avoid being the only relegated club. A month ago I'd have seen three points as a given, but not any more.

We SHOULD still win this, though I'm worried about our weakness at left back. I'd also like to find room for Harrop, possibly by using JJ as an impact sub.

Altrincham FC First Team / Winsford United match thread
« on: March 21, 2018, 08:00:26 AM »
Whilst my initial thought was that we should ease our way out of the competition, it's probably important now to give a few players a game to keep them match fit for the run in.

No reason why all last night's bench shouldn't get a run. Deasy is an obvious selection, as is Bailey-Jones provided he hasn't already played in the CSC for Stalybridge.

We'll probably lose in front of 150 people, but I'm going to wander down to assess the different options.

Altrincham FC First Team / Connor Hampson
« on: March 18, 2018, 08:55:49 AM »
Connor will be a big miss for the next three weeks. Hopefully, Andy White will be a better option in his correct position at LB than he has been on the right.

Altrincham FC First Team / PP post match interview 17/3/18
« on: March 17, 2018, 09:16:49 PM »
Just watched it on YouTube. A very honest assessment of today's failings. He thinks some players believe we've already done enough. No names, no pack drill, but I thought that today about a couple of them.

Mickleover lost at Sutton Coldfield this afternoon, so let's hope PP is better than John McGrath when it comes to arse kicking.

The worst news is that Connor Hampson has damaged his medial ligament and will be out for 3 weeks.

The good news is, they're on a long winless run. The bad news is, they don't often leave here with nothing.

Still, if Stalybridge can put 4 past them on their own ground.....

Altrincham FC First Team / Remaining fixtures
« on: February 27, 2018, 02:01:24 PM »
Number of Tuesdays and Saturdays remaining this season : 17
Number already scheduled for a fixture : 14
Fixtures TBA : 2

If Shaw Lane is off on Saturday (£50 to a bag of pig manure says it will be), there will therefore be no free dates for either subsequent rearrangements , or additional cup ties.

We can't afford to beat Winsford or we're practically guaranteed at least one week with three matches.

Altrincham FC First Team / Stourbridge away re-rearranged
« on: February 19, 2018, 11:52:36 PM »
Booked a week off work to include the game on March 5th and booked the Premier Inn at the cheap "no refund" rate. Now it's been moved to April 9th.

I wasn't amused when it was called off with me 7 miles from the ground at 1.55 on the original date. I'm even less impressed now.

Altrincham FC First Team / 1874 Northwich
« on: February 05, 2018, 10:44:11 PM »
Only just caught up with the Vase results, so belated congratulations to 1874, whose 1-0 home win over Chichester makes them the only North West club in the last 8.

They've been drawn away to the winner of Saturday's postponed tie between Wolverhampton Sporting and Leighton (Buzzard that is).

They've achieved a great deal in a relatively short time since walking away from the tainted Vics. Good luck guys (Tom Peers will doubtless be delighted).

Having played against us for Barwell and Sutton Coldfield, he's signed for Rushall Olympic.

Can anyone think of a player who's played against us three times in the same season for different clubs ?
