Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini lands top manager’s award as Wigan’s Dave Whelan earns a Lifetime Achievement honour

November 13, 2012

Roberto Mancini last night added yet another piece of silverware to his rapidly growing collection.

The cream of the north west’s football fraternity were out in force at Lancashire County Cricket Club’s The Point for the 2012 North West Football Awards.

And City boss Mancini was the night’s big winner.

The Italian, who masterminded the Blues’ first top-flight title since 1968, was crowned Manager of the Year, fighting off competition from Wigan chief Roberto Martinez and Everton supremo David Moyes.

However, City captain Vincent Kompany and United winger Antonio Valencia missed out on the Premier League Player of the Year award which was won by  Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel.

Top names including United legend Sir Bobby Charlton and Blues counterparts Tony Book and Mike Summerbee as well as City exec Patrick Vieira donned their dinner suits for the swanky do. They joined 500 VIP guests at the Red Rose’s £12m The Point conference centre for an evening of fine dining and recognition.

Hosted by BBC presenter Dan Walker, the awards were voted for by fans and high-profile industry insiders including Professional Footballers Association chief Gordon Taylor, Football Foundation chief executive Paul Thorogood and former FA chief executive Mark Palios.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan was handed the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of leading Latics from Division Three to the Premier League.

There were emotional scenes when former Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba presented the Award for Medical and Sports Science Professional of the Year, named after himself, to Bolton physio Andy Mitchell.

Mitchell was first on the scene when Muamba’s heart stopped beating during Wanderers’ FA Cup clash with Spurs at White Hart Lane in March.

His expertise, combined with others who would go on to treat the ex-England Under 21 international, led to him making a miraculous recovery.

In League One former Oldham Athletic full-back Kieran Lee lost out to ex-Tranmere star David Buchanan, now at Preston.

There was more cause for celebration at the Etihad when City, nominated for five awards, picked up the gong for Best Marketing Campaign.

United took first prize in the best Club Sponsorship/Partnership for their deal with kit sponsors AON.

Reds starlet Nick Powell was named League Two Player of the Year for his season with Crewe Alexandra which brought him to the attention of Reds’ scouts.

Stockport County defender Joe Connor was crowned Conference Player of the Year ahead of prolific Altrincham striker Damian Reeves.

Radio Manchester’s Ian Cheeseman was named Journalist of the Year in a catergory where MEN Sports News Correspondent Mike Keegan was nominated along with Tony Barrett, from The Times,  Steve Hothersall, from Radio City and The Guardian’s Andy Hunter.

Organised by marketing firm Journey9, others at the event included Oldham boss Paul Dickov, ex-City keeper Shay Given and new Blackburn chief and former Reds defender Henning Berg.

Stockport's defence has been rock solid over the last couple of years. The lad is probably a great player  in the making, he'll be snapped up if the drif out of the BSP title race...
