Title: Great Comebacks
Post by: bumble on November 26, 2014, 04:15:29 PM
I'm suprised this hasn't been done yet, although I can remember in previous incarnation if a similar thread.

Great Alty comebacks.

I'll start with the obvious Gateshead at home. Two injury time goals including a late penalty on a Tuesday night to come back from 2-0 down.

I always thought Kettering away in 2010 didn't get enough credit. Coming from behind 3 times to get an away point.

I remember coming back from 2-0 down against Northwich in the Bob Lord Trophy in the mid-90's and winning 3-2. Cracking game!

One of my rare visits to ML - we have dome this twice to Gateshead in recent years, both with winning penalties.

March 1979: losing 4-1 at home to a superb Mossley side with about 20 minutes to go.....and then winning 5-4.

I'll let someone else recount the events of that unforgettable Monday evening, which will inevitably mention Stan Allan's pivotal contribution....

Is the second one the 1st game back in the Unibond 2000/01 season? Mark Ward with a last minute penalty at Chequers End. Always remember it as until Workington last season was the last game I attended with my dad.

Bradford PA away. The season we went up in the playoffs. 1 down, not playing well then a val owen screamer and a late rod thornley winner for a 2-1 win. Some proper players in that team.

Yes this was most spectacular. I think there were only 12 minutes to go and we were 4-1 down. Stan Allan and Eamonn O'Keeffe started fighting and both were sent off. Eamonn was Mosssley's star player and went on to play for Everton and the Republic of Ireland. I think we scored 3 stoppage time including 2 identical Johnny King near post headers off corners.
Many Alty fans had cleared off to the pub at 4-1 as soon as the gates opened.
We lost the second leg 5-0!!!!

Also a 4-3 FA Cup victory against Scouseport after being 3-0 down in the late 1970's

Droylsden followed.....and then our first visit to Tottenham Hotspur.

Superb one....a week after we lost 5-0 at Colne in the Trophy.

Agree about Martin 'Bambi' Baker as well. About a week after he broke his leg, I taxi'd him back to his home in Leeds for which I was paid £750 by the club. ::) ::) ::)

I think that they went 3-0 up after about 55/60 minutes.

You are correct sir...2-0 to Southport through goals from George Dewsnap (I think), we then scored 3 times before they equalised very late on (Maurice Whittle from the penalty spot?). Jeff Johnson's last gasp winner was an incredible moment.

A Stuart Terry penalty at the Golf Road End to win it, as I recall?

A wonderful evening.

I had the world's most annoying Vics supporter sitting just to my left.

He went rather quiet after our third goal.

Made all the sweeter by the fact that they had ripped us to shreds 3-1 at Moss Lane during the previous month and their fans were extremely confident that they would turn us over again.

2-0 down early on against our 'bogey' team.

Win 3-2 via a late Paul France header.

I think that won 5-2 there on August Bank Holiday Saturday in 2001, after going 2-0 down.

Rod Thornley scored a hat trick & I think Ian Craney may have got one.

The Leek Town 0-3 to 4-3 was the first I remember as a young supporter, the week before we played Notts County at home in the cup. Sat in the stand with my dad, later on the topsy turvy 78 game against Southport was just brilliant, 2 down at HT, clawed it back really near the end, then they scored, we equalised in added time as their fans were leaving in droves, then they scored again, they piled back in only for JJ (I think) to make it 4-3. On to Droylsden and Spurs. What days. As for Mossley, I left at 1-5 an heard the cheers all the way back to the station.

Didn't Martin Baker's final appearance for Alty comprise that 9-2 annihilation of Merthyr Tydfil at Moss Lane in 1991?
