Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Opening day Match Thread.

I started go to Alty again after being a fairly irregular watcher in the 70s/80s for the 94/95 season and got hooked. Handy for home, not expensive to get in, lots of local away games, lots midweek too, relaxed atmosphere, stand where you want, i could go on. That's all gone now. I doubt I'll go to an away game this season and at £19 I don't think I'll go to every home game, especially if the team go on a losing run. I want entertainment, and if I ain't getting entertained I'm not paying for torture. I barely went in the recent relegation seasons, but I went to a lot in the Evostik and following NLN seasons. Why? Because it was fun, entertaining, relaxed (stand where you want  (pretty much)), bring your own sandwiches, lots of away games not too far away, and not too much to get in.

So in a nutshell I miss the non-league experience you got following Alty up to quite recently. That's definitely gone now - segregation, stewards every six feet, no leaning on the fence, security scans outside the ground.

I stopped going to the speedway at Belle Vue when getting in , parking and buying a programme started costing over twenty quid, and i wasn't the only one judging by the paltry attendances they get. I don't buy a programme at Alty or use the catering, but it doesn't seem that many years ago that paying £20 at Luton seemed a helluva a lot of money to watch a football match. £19 at Alty now seems a lot, especially when you look at the state of the place you're paying to go in to.

Maybe remember why you were able to bring your own sandwiches, not have to travel far to away games, stand where you want and have all that fun?

It was because we had two horrid seasons, double relegations, dropped to our lowest level in living memory, protests against the chairman, crap crowds, poisonous atmosphere, manager after manager, losing runs. That's what it took and I never want to see that again.

If we want to progress as a club and even contemplate going beyond this division, let alone stay in it, then we have to accept that we need to be more professional, money savvy and commercially focussed. That or get a sugar daddy in which no doubt would have its own vocal opposition too.

We can't have it both ways on this; you're not going to get the "traditional non-league experience" at this level any more, and I'd rather lose that than see us tumble down the divisions again.

Football webpages is a good site for score updates too. No subscription required.

I'd be interested to know what the response would be if you asked everyone who visited our website what the main reasons were why they did?

Also, how many people visit our site in relation to twitter followers or Facebook likes?

I’m surprised that the CSH is tied to a brewery I’m assuming that the CSH is owned by the club here.

Thanks for the update. From what you and Jack have said it does seem like the Libero bloke has been shafted somewhat.

I very much doubt that Thwaites have any ownership of the CSH. It'll be more likely a supply contract with them, or they lent us money, and so we have to use them to a certain degree of exclusivity.

Devil in the detail I guess. To be fair, Thwaites might have given us a very good deal that we couldn't turn down and others had to pay the price.

The problem with the family/sponsors/away stand is that away fans use the chequers end facilities, sponsors use the facilities in the lounge, and there is no space as I see it to fit in catering or toilets between that stand and the main stand because of the exit gate, turnstiles, programme sellers etc. The ordinary home fans in that stand and the chequers side of the main stand are in a very poor position as has already been mentioned.

If you allow home fans into the away section for a drink or a pee then you've got a logistical nightmare for the stewards (and I daresay the safety certificate wouldn't allow it anyway); time and time again I see disgruntled fans from both sides trying to get through that barrier and I don't envy the stewards one bit.

Short of getting relegated or having the funds to build a brand new stand to replace the two seated areas (which would cost a fortune), I don't see an ideal solution to this other than maybe make the smaller stand away fans and sponsors only? The layout of the ground is not fit for purpose in a league with the current attendances and clubs involved.

The point about taking pressure off the CSH corner is a very good one in my view.

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Website - Men's team squad
« on: July 12, 2022, 08:38:09 PM »
Really?  You think it’s unreasonable to suggest the the club website should have match reports from the preseason friendlies and a list of at least the names of the first team squad?  The club have come on leaps and bounds over the last few years but the website and the fanzine fiasco are not up to the required standard.

No one expects the club to get everything right all the time but we can point out shortcomings when we see them and the irritate us. Not being able to find the friendlies scores on the official site and having to go to an unofficial source on Saturday was irritating and given the ‘new website’ fanfare I’m providing my feedback on it.

Sadly, the alternative is to praise a job which is done to a less than professional standard because it has been done by a volunteer who is unable to accept criticism. Most organisations are run by such people and the result is usually mediocrity brought about by an unwillingness to challenge the status quo.

Give me function over form any day. Long live Alty Files.

It's interesting you say that because the changes to the official website quite possibly came about after the fans survey as part of the 5 year plan. The opinion among the fan base was clearly strong enough for the status quo to be challenged...

I think the criticisms of the new site on here are fair and valid, and people are entitled to prefer what it replaced (and credit to John Laidlar for keeping it going and the work he puts in).  But the "old" site had considerable faults too in my view and it had its detractors as the survey proved.

All in all, I much prefer what we now have and I'm sure others feel the same too.  I'm not saying this to have a dig at any individual's efforts but a bit of context is needed.

Once again I refer you to the excellent website operated by the peerless Mr John Laidler. It might look like it’s from the 90’s but it has everything you need and all much quicker than either of the new sites have managed. I’m a big fan of function over form
Absolutely. The yunguns are more impressed by flashing lights and razamataz than content. It was forever thus.

I guess it depends on what you need and what the content should be. I think a football clubs website in 2022 should be modern, easy for the casual visitor to navigate, be 100% about the actual club, commercially strong and also compatible with social media. The current site does all that.

I'll hazard a guess that if you asked everyone (not just our hard core fans) who visits the site why they do, then a big chunk of it will be match information, ticket sales, buy merchandise, important news about the club or because they followed a link off Twitter or wherever.

So how many have we sold up to now?

Any news on this?

The club might know directly I guess or say something in due course on one of their official channels. I wouldn't expect here to be the first place to get an exact figure

I think what I'm asking is when do we think that "due course" will arrive?

Maybe at the start of the actual competitive season as part of a big media push for the first league game? Who knows?

What I would say is that we started playing friendlies two days ago, we're just shy of 4 weeks to go before the Maidstone match and I've no doubt that there is a huge amount of work being done behind the scenes at all levels of the club not least with the switch to full time. It they want to make official statements about season ticket sales so far then great but I would get why it isn't a priority with everything else going on that's taking up people's time. Just my view of course, and watch there now be something official coming out...

Top kit release that, great idea well executed. Our social output has been superb over the past few months, noticeably gone up a few notches.

Away shirt pre-ordered!

Totally agree, we are light years ahead of where we were from a marketing and commercial point of view. Great to see such a slick, professional launch and totally in keeping with the new, full time approach.

We'd have a huge crowd v Oldham whenever it was played. Not having them over Xmas and then having the Xmas bumper crowd for someone else actually works in our favour in my view

What's this conundrum all about?
And what's with the seeming obsession with teasing us?
If there's some good news, just tell us!!

Maybe it's just a bit of fun to pass the days in a period of the close season when there are no matches yet and we haven't completed all our summer signings. It keeps the social media active and people engaged, good idea if you ask me.

Absolutely , it get's stronger by the year , i really think it's time for 3 up 3 down to be considered.

Many recall the days league clubs being set against any automatic promotion, now so many ex-league clubs are in the NL that wheel has certainly turned.

Wasn’t the then Luton chairman (one Eric Morecambe) one of the ones who voted against Alty joining the league.

It might have been the Luton chairman who voted against us but it certainly wasn't Eric Morecambe...

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: current rivals
« on: May 13, 2022, 03:32:30 AM »
Key criteria of a rivalry for me is the wins feel sweeter and the defeats hurt more for both sides. I'm struggling to think of a team in this league that is an actual proper rival in that respect, Halifax included.

I think the Chester rivalry has been the strongest over the last few years although I reckon they see us more as a bogey team and are annoyed that we are relatively near, smaller in their eyes yet keep outperforming them.

It's to our credit - and certainly those running the club over time who kept us solvent - that we have stuck around while the old school rivals of Macc, Vics, Runcorn all went to the wall or fell apart. I suspect Macc will be back sooner than the other two and that rivalry will come into play again.
