Altrincham FC First Team / Re: Moss Lane Or New Ground
« on: September 07, 2023, 06:00:57 AM »
We aren't moving anywhere (even though it's entertaining to discuss it).
We just need to redevelop the pop side into mostly seats and a place for the singers at the chequers end, then tart up the away end with partial cover and a couple of hundred seats, decent toilets and an away limit of about 1200 and Bob's your uncle. That's all we'll need up to and including league one. I just can't see us averaging more than 5k so that would be absolutely fine.
Steeper terracing in the Golf Road would be the icing on the cake.

Building a mostly seated stand on the popular side where you have it terraced at one end so people can move to it from a different part of the ground for 45 minutes sounds like a logistical and safety nightmare to be honest. We need to get in the culture of staying in the same part of the ground for 90 minutes as is the norm at this level and higher.

As for moving, I genuinely cannot think of anywhere that's not out of town which wouldn't cost an absolute fortune to just buy the land, have few planning restrictions on it or no local opposition. Best to make the most of where we are and enjoy it's many benefits

Altrincham FC First Team / Re: York City manager sacked

York like to sack managers on a regular basis.

Yes. Their Owner/Chairman seems to have "Peter Swales" Syndrome.

TBF there didn't seem to be much love for him among the fans.

Swales sacked no less than 11 Managers during his 20 year reign at City and if you discount Tony Book and John Bond who managed almost 8 years between them an appointment as City Manager was like the kiss of death with very few, if in fact any, lasting a full season in charge.

Given that Bond, McNeill and Kendall all quit, who are the 11 that he sacked?

Well I've been watching Alty for nearly 40 years, have had season tickets and seen the worst moments and I think this is fantastic news. Well done to everyone involved. I'll tell you what's happened, and it's not about ignoring the old time fans.

It's been about looking outwards and forwards, not relying on the old boys or recruiting and appealing for help from within all the time.

Revamping the digital and commercial side, the Puma kit deal, being more visual in the town, doing the community stuff. It all adds up, and there is no doubt in my mind that it contributed to the the investment.

There's still work to be done - seat stickers and late season tickets shouldn't be overlooked - but give me this Alty now over plenty of Altys in the past.

Dream on! With the club's requirement to maximise profit margin you'd be looking at a 20 for a £ banger from Costco or worse.

Is trying to bring more money in really such a bad thing? What would make you buy from our snack bars that isn't there right now?

You could well be right there.
Clearly it's not just Wrecsam trying to buy success in this league!

I've mentioned before about finances in this league, boring to some I'm sure but the numbers are staggering.

Notts County lost £1.7m in 2022 and were about £14m in debt. If it wasn't for their owners underwriting it then the receivers would have been in by now.

As for Chesterfield, they were about £12m in debt at the last count but about £10m of that was to a supporters trust who took it on from the previous owner. That £10m was converted into £5m of shares last summer. So on paper they made £15m in one swoop. They still run at a heavy loss all the same, but a massive chunk of their debt is simply not going to be called in.

Why is it so important that we know this right now? There are still matches to be played, the season isn't even officially over yet...

I think it was a reasonable assessment of the situation in general. I really do think though that we need to stop talking about the play offs. Without serious investment in the playing personnel, this is just a pipedream unfortunately.

Ok, let's take a look at the other clubs from Woking down to us. Any supplementary information welcome:

4th) Woking - decent crowds but no big investment that I've heard of;
5th) Barnet - poor crowds. Do they have an investor?
6th) Boreham Wood - poor crowds but a lot of investment to geet them this far;
7th) Bromley -  decent crowds and some success in recent seasons but no big investment;
8th) Southend - a big club who should be too strong for us if they get thingssorted off the pitch;
9th) Eastleigh - not much bigger crowds than us and no big investment I've heard of (they even had to take seats out of their stand);
10th) Dagenham And Redbriidge - poor crowds but an investor, last I heard;
11th) FC Halifax Town - similar crowds to us and no big investor, and managed fourth place recently;
12th) Oldham Athletic - a big club who should challenge for promotion;
13th) Wealdstone - poor crowds and no big investor;
14th) Gateshead - small crowds and no big investment;
15th) Solihull Moors - small crowds but substantial investment;
16th) Dorking Wanderers - small crowds and no big investor (even if it won't feel like that for their founder);

Certainly top 7 will be very difficult, but we can definitely make the top half, and there isn't that much of a gap between 12th and 7th, and who knows how things might change in the future? Having got to mid-table, the play offs certainly long term is an obvious target.

If by investors you mean owners and directors who underwrite big losses with share issues or loans, then I'd say only Dorking, Halifax and Wealdstone wouldn't be on that list. Aldershot would probably sneak into that class too.

Incidentally, York and (to a lesser degree) Maidenhead are heavily bankrolled, as are Fylde and Ebbsfleet who have been promoted.

I think we were absolutely correct to go full time, simply because part time is not a sustainable long term structure at this level. Remember we had the whole debt free, money in the bank, part time and proud of it mentality and we ended up at our lowest ebb following two relegations. Bear in mind you've got National League North becoming more and more full time too.

I think this season has been a massive reality check, but equally I'd love to know who actually thought going full time would suddenly propel us into L2. Lots of lessons to learn in what is a long term project.

£100k is chicken feed in this league. You need millions to compete at the very top.

Far far  too many loans this season . Yes they certainly improved the team but it isn’t the way ahead if we are serious about progressing up the National league table on a consistent basis. We have to do it under our own steam, and be able to sustain it, otherwise we have to be brutally realistic and lower our ambitions, I’m tired of hearing that we have one of the lowest budgets etc like it’s a badge of honour. We need some serious investment, this is a dog eats dog league, then there is the stadium improvements to find funding for. IMHO we are a long long way off league football.

In fairness we've had new directors and their investment coming in which has enabled us to go full time in the first place. If you look at some of the very highest wage bills in this league you'd need proper sugar daddy money to compete so in that case it's a reasonable point comparing ours.

Totally agree with you re the ground. A pound spent on that is a pound less spent on the team and we badly need to spend on it. Rock and hard place springs to mind

Or option 4. Suggest to a hard working volunteer who generally does a difficult job very well that one or two minor tweaks might improve things a bit.

And I don't get this notion that keeps floating around that we can't be more professional or slick without losing the friendliness or family atmosphere.

it's hard to be critical of anyone doing anything for the club in their own time and purely for the love of altrincham fc, but if things can't be commented constructively the club will never improve the things that need improving.

Totally agree. It's a very public role at the end of the day, creates an image and impression of the club and if it isn't right it should be called out. There's a way of going about it though...

Biggest highlight for me overall was the way we continue to grow as a support base and engage with the town and beyond. Some tremendous crowds this season, and we cannot afford to let that slip. I also think the way we are commercially and media wise is so much more modern and sharper than a few years ago. No, things are not perfect (repeat, things are not perfect) but the whole cheap and cheerful, tinpot image is slipping away in lots of ways and we are better for it.

On the flip side the stadium and stewarding issues remain and they are a big negative. The popular side in particular is a disgrace and the manner of fencing and segregation on it needs to be clearly and unequivocally addressed by the club. It has remained an issue for god knows how long yet never seems to change.

Some interesting views regarding a supporters group. It's worth remembering that we're now in an age where we have a strong official social media presence where views are surely read at the very least. You then have the curious status of this forum which is unofficial and probably used by only a small minority of our fanbase yet has the occasional posts from officials on it. Add it all up and the views of the fans can be easily seen, and across a broad church. Very different from 30 people in the Noel White Suite on a Monday night asking the chairman stuff.

I would certainly say though that there needs to be some properly coordinated link between the club and it's fanbase where concerns and suggestions are logged and acted upon. A supporter liaison officer could be effective.
