The Observer today report the demise of Romanian side Unirea Urziceni. Those of you who follow the European club competitions may remember that only 2 seasons ago they beat Rangers 4-1 at Ibrox in the Champions League under the management of ex-Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu. When Liverpool put them out of the Europa League last season cracks were beginning to appear.
Urziceni is a small town (population 20,000) and Unirea had no history until businessman Dumitru Bucsaru purchased the club in 2002. In 5 seasons he got them to the top flight in Romania. The club apparently had just ONE regular away supporter despite which they were champions in 2009. It is estimated that Bucsaru made about £18M in the process.
But then he realised the only way was down, so he sold all the best players last season, and the club were relegated. The authorities this week confirmed that he had walked away, leaving a £1.5M tax debt behind him, and the club has folded.
And we thought Rushden & Diamonds were in deep doo-doo !
Any Crawley Town fans reading this post should be VERY afraid !
