THE LONG HOPEFULLY HOT SUMMER
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:10:11 AM »

Regular readers will know that I am giving FIFA's massive commercial bunfight in the land of the springbok a total swerve.

So to fill those empty weeks when my regular dose of the game I love is forcibly removed, and once the dust has settled over playoffs (and maybe the AGM Cup), I intend to put in a pre-season assessment and prediction for all 24 BSP clubs.

I shall work backwards alphabetically, and Wimbledon will be treated as W, thus ensuring that I come to the Mighty Robins last ! (If Alfreton come up I shall cheat).

At this stage, I'd be interested to know if potential readers/correspondents/dissidents would prefer a normal post, or a poll. All comments gratefully received. Forza Alty !

Why are you boycotting the World Cup? I know you've already explained, but I can't remember. Commercialisation, saturation, etc?

I understand how annoying it is that the advertising companies have gotten such a stake in the tournament, but surely you could watch the odd game and just not use the sponsors products for the duration? The corporate side of the tournament shouldn't spoil the football.

sadly football at that level is now a part of the corporate language. leaves me cold.  I'm not interested in the corporate world of the prem either.

leaves me bored watching a set of over paid media whores run around on a pitch.

hope it goes well and all that but I'm just not bothered.

Basically a protest against "The Hand of Henry", where, had the boot been on the other foot (or should that be glove etc. ?) FIFA would have acted in the interests of "sportsmanship and justice", and not of course in any way because losing a "giant" such as France would adversely affect revenues.

Commercialisation, overpaid prima donnas, exploitation of the poor black minority in South Africa - and I agree 100% with the sentiments expressed in the intervening posts. I'll probably pick the goals out of the summarised highlights if I can be bothered.

Although I agre FIFA wanted France in the World Cup Finals all they could do after the event would be to punish Henry retrospectively. It is up to the ref & the liner to make sure they act on such cheating at the time.
Far from me to say, however, that it may have possibly been hinted to them they might give France the benefit of the doubt.

Im not an England fan, havent been strongly buoyed by them for a fair few years now. I think hating half the squad and not feeling any emotional commitment from the millionaire players helped with that.

However, I will watch as many world cup games as possible, including Englands. Its a chance to see amazing players and good football that doesnt normally grace our free to air television. Its an opportunity to see teams play each other that will likely only ever face up in the world cup. Fans from all over the world, cultures coming together, Brazilian girls in bikini's, drunken dutch fellas in daft hats having the time of their lives regardless of how they under perform, bizarre stats about how there are 127 permanent Paraguayan residents in the UK (in 2006).

I soak it all up, I prey for upsets, I love every minute of the media attention each squad gets.

Yeah its true that the commercial side has ruined it for being passionate about the struggles of your team, if that the millionaires of England. And its also true that seeing mastercard signs every five seconds when you owe the f**kers a few quid is pretty annoying. But see through the plastic sheen and enjoy the tournament. Its the results and star players that get written in history, not Blatter and his Corporate cronies.

I agree with OGC completely. Love turning the TV on knowing there will be random fixtures like Honduras vs Switzerland on terrestrial.
