Would of loved to see Moss Lane that full, if we got a big cup tie or title game here i think a capping of around 4500 would be put in place.
..
Why on earth would it, the ground's safety certificate allows 6085? Prior to the Taylor Report it held around 10,000 before the terraces had barriers. We had nearly 8,000 in against Orient in around 1980, plenty late 70s cup ties were 5000+. The ground is much more up to date and safer now.
Given that the police will insist on a 'sterile area' somewhere on the popular side, the effective capacity is probably nearer 5500. The gate for the Orient game in Jan 1980 was 7844 - I was in the Golf Road that afternoon & there was plenty of room. However, the authorities are much touchier now than they were then.

Chequers End for me V Orient - I remember it being rammed to the blood gills!

Where were the Orient fans, and what gates did they use?

They had part of the popular side - I seem to remember that there were turnstiles in use at the far end of Golf Road on that occasion so they would have accessed that part of the pop side nearest the Golf Road?

Thanks.  So they stood where Vics fans used to stand, Pop side at the Golf Road End.  Never liked standing there myself.

Good Friday 1966 Alty 5 MAcc 0 in front of 7329
Good Friday 1968 Alty 0 Macc 2 in front of 8721

and for an unexpectedly large crowd in a cup game
Cheshire Senior Cup 24 April 67 Alty 3 Witton 1 crowd 7290

Happy days!

Was at all three of them (and the first leg of the final at the Central Ground too. In retrospect, losing that 0-1 set the second leg up a treat but I was gutted at the time!)
