Post by: Altyant on March 03, 2010, 09:01:59 PM
TASC Football Predictions Competition 2010

Think that you are Altrincham's top tipster? Want the chance to win some money for your predictions?

TASC is launching its first ever football prediction competition.

The rules are simple:
1) Simply predict the outcomes of 60 football matches
2) Earn points based on your predictions as follows:
1 point for the correct number of goals scored by the home team
1 point for the correct number of golals scored by the away team
1 bonus point for getting the result 100% correct.

A league table will be updated on the website and forum each week. Entry into the competition costs £5. The winner will receive 20% of the income, the runner up will recieve 15% of the income, 3rd place will recieve 10% of the income and, one selected place will win their £5 stake back. The remainder of the income will go to TASC. Please note that where entrants finish level on points, the number of 100% correct results will be used as the tie-breaker.

How do you enter?
Simply either download an entry form from the forum, or pick up an entry form from the TASC stand of the club shop, at the home against Kettering on March 16th. Completed entries should be returned to me no later than FRIDAY MARCH 19th. The first matches take place on Saturday March 20th.

Nice one. I'll be having a piece of that action (albeit my track record with predictions is awful)!

This is right up my street (not that I'm any good at it, but great entertainment). If it's a success, perhaps we could make it a monthly competition next season ?

I agree, a great idea but a monthly coupon would have been more interesting (and probably raise more cash). Still I'm in !

If it's a success how about one for the World Cup Finals Group Matches during the summer including a prediction for Winners, Runners Up, 3rd & 4th places ?

hmmmm  ??? First match now let me see ?..........Altrincham v Rushden & Diamonds  ::) ?

What's the betting Gunners11 goes for a 5-1 Alty win ?  ;D

I see that the form includes Alty v York as one of the matches to be played 20 April.

In my eagerness to enter, I've already put that down as a 1-0 win to Alty !

I guess I'll have to rub it out and fill in the correct score before I hand my coupon in next week ?  ::)

New fixture list uploaded on my original post. Only change is that the Alty v York game has been replaced by Wigan v Arsenal.

As we now have a game saturday, you can collect/ hand in entry forms at the club shop before kick off and at half of the York and Kettering games

Another great result for Alty at Mansfield, which caught out a number of the predictors who have since slipped down the table. Congratulations to George Heslop, Baldrick, Peter Wragg and Brian Flynn who took maximum points last night. Peter and Flynny are the nights biggest movers jumping 7 and 6 places respectively. At the top Colin moves a point clear of the field and at the bottom, Grahame Rowley gets off the mark

Updated table is attached

The next update should appear on Monday
Title: Week 3 Update
Post by: Altyant on March 28, 2010, 06:43:17 PM
A bad result for Alty this weekend, which none of our predictors saw coming - none of us had Alty down to the loose the game!

No change at the top of the table, as an impressive 5 points out of the 9 available keeps Colin Mitchell in the lead. George Heslop moves up into the 'money positions as Peter Foster drops to fourth. Ian is up to second, two points behind Colin. Paul Salt, Brian Flynn and Peter Wragg all move up in the top half of the table. The biggest climber of the week is Grahame Rowley who jumps 8 places to 11th.

Its all tight in the btoom half too, as just 2 points separate 19th and 11th.

David Martin the weeks only non-mover aside from Colin Mitchell holds the 'stake-back' position of 15th.

As usual the table is attached below. Next update will appear before the weekends game

Yesss !!  City 3 Wigan 0 another 3 pointer for (S)alty's Sad Selections and upto 11 points -

all I need now is Kettering & Rushden & Diamonds to draw 1-1 and Stevenage to win 2-1 tonight and I'll be in a podium finishing spot ??

Onwards and upwards

Only another 49 matches to go .........
Title: Week 4 Update
Post by: Altyant on March 31, 2010, 08:02:18 PM
No Alty games since the weekend and the predictors have amabged to produce a low scoring week. The two midweek BSP matches had most of us in a flap, in fact we all had pretty similar predictions. So, how has all this affected the table?

Despite a low scoring week, Colin Mitchell is still in pole position, with Ian Hunter retaining second place. Peter Foster moves back into the top three, tied on points and 100% corrects with Paul Salt. Grahame Rowley drops back into the bottom half, Alex Tracey moves up 4 places and Bryan Ford jumps up above David Martin into the stake-back position.

As usual the updated table is attached below. Next update will be after the Easter fixtures

Title: Week 5 Update
Post by: Altyant on April 08, 2010, 09:58:44 PM
A bumper easter weekend, with 8 games (including the rearranged York v AFC Wimbledon game) has given the predictors soemthing to think about. So how has this affected the table?

Colin Mitchell has finally relinquished top spot, being replaced by Ian Hunter, who was aided by being the only person predicting Chelsea to beat United 2-1. John Edwards and Pete Hennerley are both tied for third place after impressive weeks. In the top half, George Heslop and Brian Flynn are non-movers, Peter Foster is down 3 to 6 and Anthony moves into the top half.

In the bottom half Bryan Ford and David Martin climb 5 and 4 places respectively. Michael and Grahame Rowley both drop a couple of places. Peter Wragg wins the weeks wooden spoon scoring an impressively terrible 0/24(!!!) and as such Peter drops 7 places to 13th. Alex Tracey remians 14th, Baldrick drops into the stake-back position while Mike Garnetts correct prediction of York 2 Alty 1 moves him up one place. Phil Jordan and Jimmy Hankinson bring up the rear.

Its all still to play for with 9 points separating top and bottom. Next update will be thursday of next week, as the games start to come thick and fast  :)

Have I misunderstood the scoring system, or is my total incorrect ? With six of the results missing and unchecked, I reckon I've got 13 points, yet the table shows only 8 !
Title: Re: TASC Football Predictions Competition 2010
Post by: Altyant on April 08, 2010, 10:44:44 PM
Hi Phil - have just had a scan through, 8 points appears to be correct.

Scoring system works as follows:

If you had predicted York to win 2-1 on Monday, you would get:

1 point for predicting Yorks goal tally correctly
1 point for predicting Altys goal tally correctly
1 bonus point for getting the result 100% correct.

If you still think there is an issue let me know.

edit - it seems that maybe the scoring system wasnt totally clear on the form. Everyone has been scored on the same system, as shown above. Apologies for the confusion

It may well be the form ! I'd read it that I got a point for the correct number of goals for one side, even if I had the wrong result - I assume this isn't the case ?

That's how I thought it worked ?

eg If you had Alty to win 2-1 and they actually got beaten 2-3 you still got a point ?
Title: Re: TASC Football Predictions Competition 2010
Post by: Altyant on April 09, 2010, 07:07:29 PM
Yes that is the case:

To clarify - Phil had York to win 2-0 on Bank Holiday Monday against us. Which scored him 1 point (predicted the correct number of goals scored by one team). As he predicted Altys number of goals incorrectly he scores no further points for the game.

On the other hand (S)alty had York to win 1-0. He had neither Alty or Yorks scores correct so he scores 0 points for that game.

Mike Garnett had York down to win 2-1. He scores three points for the game.
1 point for predicting York to score 2
1 point for predicting Alty to score 1
1 point as he has the result 100% correct

Hope this clarifies things. Phil I will recheck your predictions. If you have any other queries, pop in to the club shop tomorrow so I can check I have your predictions are right

My understanding was, using Monday's example, that I would have 1 point for predicting a York victory, plus a further 1 point for the correct number of goals scored by York - 2 points in total. It's the use of the word "result" on the form which is confusing. To me, that simply means "home, away,or draw".

Title: Week 6 Update
Post by: Altyant on April 15, 2010, 09:11:55 PM
Another big week this week, with some players scoring heavily across the 8 matches, having a big effect on the table.

After being knocked off top spot by Ian Hunter last week, Colins 8 points on a lucky Saturday for him helped him storm back to the top of the table. Up into second place, jumping an amazing 10 places after scoring 12 points across the week is David Martin. Last weeks leader Ian drops down into joint third, which he shares with Peter Wragg, who after scoring 0 last week (sorry Peter!!) scored 8 over the weekend. Pete Hennerley is down 1 place to 5th, a point of the money places. Anthony moves up 3 places to 6th, Peter Foster drops to 7th and, George Heslop, Brian Flynn and John Edwards all slide in the top half.

In the bottom half, Paul Salt is down 4 to 11th, Michael drops 2 places to 13th and, Bryan Ford drops 5 places into 15th. Baldrick, Mike Garnett, Jimmy Hank and Phil all move up. Grahame Rowley is the weeks only non-mover and, Alex drops into bottom spot. Its all still in the metling pot, with only 9 points separating the money places and 19th spot.

Another big week next week, with 7 games taking us past the half-way stage of the competition

Title: Week 7 Update
Post by: Altyant on April 20, 2010, 10:27:29 PM
A bumper week of games and the table has changed beyond all recognition.

It seems for Phil that 100% correct predictions are a bit like buses. You wait ages for one and then two come along at once. Peter Hennerley amazingly managed to get every home tally incorrect for Saturdays games, whilst getting the away tally correct in every-one of the days games. Star predictor for the weekends games was Ian who even got the Cambridge result correct as part of his three 100% correct predictions. Michael and Phil a close second with 2 each. Oddly nobody had Wigan to score 3 against Arsenal!!

So onto the table. The top 3 are only separated by their number of 100% correct predictions, therefore Ian leads from Colin and David. Peters Wragg and Hennerley head the chasing pack staying in 4th and 5th respectively. Brians Flynn and Ford jump up the table (an impressive 8 places for Bryan Ford). John drops 2 places to 8th and Michael climbs into the top half.

Jimmy Hank march up the table continues (I told you Jimmy!), Graham Rowley is up 5 places to 11th, while Peter Foster slips down to 12th, Baldrick droips to 12th and like the proverbial stone, I plummet 8 places to 14th. Phils impressive week moves him into the AGM Cup, stake back position of 15th, Paul Salt, George Heslop and Mike Garnett complete this weeks sliders, Alex Tracey remains 19th.

Still all to play for this weekend sees the final round of conference games as part of a huge 11 games.

As usual the table is attached below. The points include tonights match at Salisbury and, the Hayes v Kidderminster game which took place last week, and not tonight

Do I get a 10 point deduction if I put my team into Administration ?

Title: Week 8 Update
Post by: Altyant on April 26, 2010, 10:46:45 PM
As we head into the home straight, the predictions competition threw a mixed bag at the entrants with Football League games mixed in with the usual BSP and Premiership games. So how did everyone fair? Highest scorer for the week was Paul Salt who got his 'season' back on track with an excellent 10 points. Close behind with 8 were Geroge Heslop; Ian Hunter; Mark Garnett and; Peter Foster. A further point behind were John Edwards; Baldrick; Michael McDonnell, Anthony and Phil Jordan.

So how does this affect the table? Ian Hunter remains top, four points clear of the competition, along with the fact that he has more 10% correct predictions than anybody else. Peter Wragg jumps up into second, with David Martin remaining third. Colin drops out of the money positions and into fourth, Pete Hennerley remains fifth and, John Edwards is up to sixth. Paul Salt and George Heslop both jump a massive 9 places into seventh and eighth respectively, Michael remains ninth and Peter Foster is up to 10th.

Bryan Ford is down four places to eleventh, Baldricks good week moves him up to twelth, with Brian Flynn down seven to thirteenth. Anthony and Phil Jordan remain in 14th and 15th respectively, with Jimmy Hank down 6 places. Mike Garnett is up to 17th, Grahame Rowley drops into 18th and Alex remains 19th.

Only two weeks and 14 games to go. Can anyone stop Ian Hunter??Who will be borrowing Colin Peakes rule book to ensure the AGM Cup spot? Next update will be Monday of next week

Title: Week 9 Update
Post by: Altyant on May 06, 2010, 09:22:31 PM
Apologies for the late posting of this update, due to IT issues.

The penultimate week of the Predictions Competition, with a total of 15 points available. A relatively low points scoring week, saw Peter Wragg, George Helsop, David Martin, Brian Flynn, Baldrick and Michael McDonnell all top score with 5 points. Grahame Rowley was a point behind.

So how does this all affect the Predictions Table? Despite a low scoring week, Ian Hunter remains top of the table, with a two point lead over Peter Wragg. A further point behind is David Martin. George Heslop and Michael McDonnell both climb 4 places each. Colin Mitchell continues his Oxofrd-esque slump into sixth place. John Edwards and Paul Salt both move up a place each, while Baldrick and Brian Flynn are both up 3 to ninth and tenth respectively.

Pete Hennerley is down 6 to 11th, Peter Foster is down 2 to 12th and Bryan Ford is down 2 to 13th. Anthony remains in 14th, with Mike Garnett up into the AGM Cup spot. Jimmy Hankinson, Grahame Rowley and Alex Tracey are all non-movers. Phil Jordan drops down two places into 17th.

Next week is the final week of the competition with everything still to play for and everybody still with a chance of winning a prize.

I have to remove some of the older PDFs of the tables from the thread, if you want a copy of them, PM me your address and I will email them out to you
Title: Final Update
Post by: Altyant on May 09, 2010, 10:08:06 PM
The final day of the season didnt really produce any shocks, however with everyone in the Predictions League still in with the chance of winning a prize and, 27 points to play for this week, would there be any twists in the Predictions run-in.

Well, nobody scored particularly well, and nobody predicted Chelsea's 8-0 win against Wigan, or even Burnley beating Spurs. Joint top scorers for the week were Grahame Rowley and and David Martin who scored 8 points.

So how has the table finished? Well, none of the top 5 have changed places, and the top three are separated only by the finest of margins - their 100% correct predictions. Six points behind the prize winning top 3, came 'Mystic George' and Michael tied on points and 100% correct predictions. Brian Flynn jumps four places to 10th and, early pace-setter Colin Mitchell limps into 7th. Paul Salt and Baldrick are none movers in 8th and 9th respectively, while Anthony climbs four places to 10th.

John Edwards drops four places into 11th and, Peter Foster remains in 12th. Mike Garnett climbs into 13th and, Grhame Rowleys good week moves him into 14th. Bryan Ford drops into the AGM Cup spot. Jimmy Hankinson remains in 16th, while a horrible week for Pete Hennerley sees him drop six into 17th. Phil Jordan drops into 18th and Alex Tracey remains in 19th.

The prize breakdown is as follows:
1st place - Ian Hunter (£19.00)
2nd place - Peter Wragg (£14.25)
3rd place - David Martin (£9.50)
AGM Cup stakeback - Bryan Ford (£5.00)

Many thanks to everybody who particpated amd comiserations to those who didnt win a prize
