Title: York City manager sacked
Post by: MarpleAlty on August 28, 2023, 08:08:51 PM
First casualty of the season already.

I can't imagine Unsworth will be too far behind him at this rate.

Second casualty.

Eastleigh axed Lee Bradbury last week.

Yes. Their Owner/Chairman seems to have "Peter Swales" Syndrome.

TBF there didn't seem to be much love for him among the fans.

Swales sacked no less than 11 Managers during his 20 year reign at City and if you discount Tony Book and John Bond who managed almost 8 years between them an appointment as City Manager was like the kiss of death with very few, if in fact any, lasting a full season in charge.

I think you're all confusing York's new owners 394 Sports Ltd, otherwise known as the Billionaire Ugglia family, who bought out Glenn Henderson in June this year - he was universally reviled. Although mother Julia co-chairs with her son Matt it is he who seems to take charge of day to day affairs. They have a chequered history with football, Google their name and Yeovil. I live locally and as they've already pumped in something like £1m on the squad I'd say they're still pretty popular and a few City fans I know were desperate for the manager to go. All a bit playing Football Manager at the moment though, so the next appointment will make be interesting viewing.

Given that Bond, McNeill and Kendall all quit, who are the 11 that he sacked?

Oh Yes, forgive me. I can see my error in that.  Whether it makes any difference to my intended assertion that Peter Swales was ruthless with Managers at City during his time there I will leave to individuals to decide.

Was Peter Reid (not our one!) there under Swales? And for us younger supporters, what was Swales like at Alty?

The manager at the time of Peter Swales taking control was Johnny Hart, who retired through ill health. Tony Book was never sacked, and retired after two spells in charge.

The other managers of the Swales era were either sacked, or "left by mutual consent". They were :

Ron Saunders
Malcolm Allison
John Bond
John Benson
Billy McNeill
Jimmy Frizzell
Mel Machin
Howard Kendall
Peter Reid

The final manager appointed by Swales was Brian Horton, who was sacked at a later stage by Francis Lee.

The Daily Mirror printed souvenir posters, "Lee in Swales out". Still, with his Alty connection and knowing someone connected to Swales, I find it hard to share such sentiments. Was Reid a bit longer than a year? He's the main one I remember (and later had a catchy song about him).

If memory serves me...most of those listed had sucessful periods as managers.....hence getting a gig at City
