In the 1970's there was Driving Test adjudicator at Sale of the same name, with a reputation for not passing people at their firt attempt.
Failed me in 1968. Mind you, there WERE 13 crosses on the failure notice ::) I've improved a little since then.

No, I ran over the man with the red flag.
When I took my motorbike test in Sale (1964 I think), the examiner stepped out from behind a parked car with his hand raised, to test the "emergency stop". Unfortunately, he did it when I was 50yards away, and a bike in front of me (not taking a test) hit him, and carried on.
I stopped, he wasn't badly hurt, and I passed.
