Title: Big scores
Post by: Mick on September 24, 2023, 12:55:50 PM
Just checked...won before by 5 goal margin in National over last 20 years - without scoring six.
In North beat Hinkley 8 nil and beat Boston 6-1 and 7-1. Also beat Droylsden 6 nil.
Plenty of five goal margins in North

Did we beat Merthyr Tydfil 9-2 ? or has my medication not kicked in yet !

I also remember a 6-1 win at the Drill Field one Tuesday night, what fun  :D maybe the Cheshire Cup ?

I remember that we beat Cambridge U 5-0 at home in 2007, but can't remember any more at National League level.

I think it was the biggest win since Merthyr Tydfil's 9-2, but I seem to remember us beating Boston United 6-3 during that season 90-91. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong though, may be another game since then but can't think of one currently.

We did 7 at Alfreton in the North too in that purple kit... wasn't the 7th a James Jones rocket into the top bins from memory...?

Yesterday marked the first time that we have scored six goals in the top flight of Non League football since a 6-2 victory at Boston United on Wednesday, 27th February 1991.

The 9-2 home win over Merthyr was 11 days before the 6-2 win at Boston and came during our record 28 match unbeaten run , we were flying , though the season was destined to end in huge disappointment of course . Memories from the York Street thrashing include Asa Hartford playing for Boston and in the bar afterwards rival bosses Peter Morris ( Kettering ) and Martin O' Neill ( Wycombe ) deep in conversation !

Yes. Although the long unbeaten run was fantastic, I seem to recall there was a high proportion of draws in there which didn't really help us

Possibly Brian , though the late season collapse caused by the log jam of matches with a tired wafer thin team/squad is what did for us .

I agree Pete. That was the main factor undoubtedly.
Can't help thinking if we'd have been full time then, we'd have had a better shot but, as you say, the games just came too fast to handle at the end.
