It won't work, you won't be able to recieve a 'signal'

Unfortunately it will mean a long antagonising wait to find out scores until you get off the plane and into an area with signal. I spend a week last year trying to find out what the aldershot score was.

Best bet is to put your phone on silent and get someone to text you or set up text alerts. Depending on what height you're flying at and whether or not it's over land, you usually pick up the odd bit of signal, which will allow any texts to get through. If you've ever left your phone on by accident during a flight across Europe you'll notice all the 'welcome to Orange France' 'Welcome to T-Mobile Germany', etc messages when you land ::) Good luck!

the EU decided that people may use their phone on flights that are over 3000ft so as long as you are flying within the EU and you can get signal check away my friend

Sort of - that's for the so far very few flights that have been kitted out with all the gear for in-flight calls, which includes a mini base station linked to the phone networks by satellite. Without an on-board base station any phones left on will be constantly transmitting at full power, trying to get a signal. That's far more likely to cause interferance so I'd imagine the cabin crew will still get sniffy if you start waving your phone about.

The Gazelle? Jiggling? At 3,000 feet+? The pilot will certainly earn his wages that day!
